Cali's favorite herding toy!

One time a guy brought one of those big exercise balls to the dog park and let his english bulldog push it around (snorting merrily away). I turned around to look for Missy, and she was running along the fence of the park, trying to escape from the ball.

Then I won one of those balls in a drawing at work. I inflated it at home, and she wasn't hiding from it, but she was definitely avoiding it. If I rolled it toward her she would run away.

I ended up buying a couple rubber balls at the store the other day for some kids I was watching. I bought one for Missy to see if she would play with it. It's the size of a basketball. Nope. She avoids that one too. Why can't my dog be cool? :rolleyes2:

Cali is doing a serious job of herding that ball. She is really into it.

I have a Jeep Cherokee that I load up lol. They usually drop down to $1 in the winter months and I snatch them all up. I let the air out of them and put them in a box in the attic until I need them!

Thank you! She also loves her Frisbees but we had to take a break from them for a while because she somehow broke a tooth in the back of her mouth and had to have it removed a few weeks ago. We were using the rubber coated lightweight ones that "HeroUSA" makes specifically for dogs and she still managed to hurt herself.
 
Thank you everyone for the kind words! I will definitely have to get someone else to video next time as its a bit hard to pick that big of a ball up with one hand and throw it while holding the camera lol. I will get one of her playing with one in the house tomorrow. It's crazy how well she can control it! She is definitely a natural with them.. there was one in the yard at my parents house a few years ago and she walked up and nudged it once and has not stopped playing with them since!
 
Awesome video (and great looking dog). Lerwick would go NUTS over a ball like that. May have to get one for him for our dog park visits. They used to have a hard plastic ball there about the size of a basketball, and Lerwick loves to herd that thing around. Today when we visited the dog park, however, we couldn't find it anywhere. Alas, we won't be able to buy them in bulk, as we'd never be able to get them home from the store in our compact sedan. :lol:
 
Love the video. Hollie used to herd the ball just like that too. Shelby on the other hand just doesn't get it. She just likes to run and jump over the ball. She also likes to teater on top of the ball (with the ball under her belly). Her favorite thing to herd are bugs!
 
That was awesome!!!! I'm getting one tomorrow. You let the air out of them and store them. Are they beach balls? I thought it was a hard plastic ball by watching the video. But admittedly, I was watching that beautiful Sheltie much more than the ball!

It's a great sport, you got a natural there. I can't believe Cali brings the ball back by pushing it towards you, very naturally!!
