Can someone explain clicker training?

Wall-e learns great with the clicker! It helps him learn a lot faster. I love clicker training because it marks the exact moment that the dog does something right and gives the dog so much information. If you use the clicker a lot (I use it every day), you'll find that eventually your timing gets really good, and your dog learns even faster. As with anything, "practice makes perfect!"

I do recommend that you get a few clickers, as most people tend to lose the little thing easily!

Clicker

I used a clicker for this sheltie I re-trained in the weave poles and on contacts.I showed him last week along with my dog and he did real nice. Though he did nice and NQ ed his contatcs were okay and his weaves were decent. More work but at least I got him not to focus on my hand for the weaves and he isnt bailing from the middle of the conatct. I got him doing 2020.

Will it be the same if I click with my tongue instead clicker? Because as much as I am easy to forget where I put things, and being goofy at certain times, I'm quite sure I won't forget to bring my tongue with me.

No it will not be. Here's the reason:
The click is consistent. It will always sound the same. And you can click while saying the cue or command - all at once. That is why you cannot use a word or click with your tongue. Hope it helps. You can get a lot of information on clicker training at www.clickertraining.com

I use the clicker. I have a few of them. I use them when training both my dogs the same thing (like recall when we are out walking). I recently bought the clicker+ which is digital. It makes 4 sounds, that way each of my dogs has 'their' click. I am finding it very easy to use with the two of them to train both at the same time. Now, I can get Chinook to sit/stay or down/stay and then turn around and train Maia on her basics. She has her click that gets her her treat, and he has his.

if ur forgetful thats why its good to get a few of them...i picked up 4 of them for $1.82 a piece at petco. the ones i got had a metal ring attached to them so u can connect them to ur keys.

Well, I went to my first clickertraining class tonight. It was very informative. I am very excited about my two starting next week. I am very determined to have the two of them be at the top of their classes respectively. (they are the only shelties there too :smile2:). We got homework! It sounds like a lot of fun. Today in class we got to shape each other's behaviour with the clicker and no words. It was so fun to watch and participate. Now I know how the dogs feel and somewhat think. I like the instructor so the classes should be fun and informative. :smile2:

I'm a bit envy with you guys. I still could not find a petshop in my small town and I don't think I will find an obedience class, although I might be able to find one, there is a german shepherd school here.

Yesterday I try to find clicker at Ace hardware (no luck), I find collar and dog food and some toys there (the toy option is limited to : ball to throw, ball with rope or toy for him to chew on).

You know what works well for a make-shift clicker ...

The lid of a juice bottle!

You know those metal lids of glass bottles that have the security seal bump that "pops" when you open it? Yeah, wash out the lid and use it. Makes a very similar noise to a clicker and will work in the same way! It's a little more awkward to hold than a clicker is, but you can work around that.
