Canine Influenza

Everyone have a truly wonderful Christmas with your Shelties, being careful not to spoil them.
I'll be happy to let you know what I've come up with, as a personal guideline for our hospital, after a few days consideration and information collection. - Dr. Mac

Thank-you Dr. Mac. That was really nice. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas with your Shelties as well.

Stay warm
Danielle

I'm glad the question has been brought up.

Last year my vet recommended the vaccine and I had my two dogs vaccinated given that I was starting to go to trials in the southeast. Afterwards I came across this article (3rd down) in the Aug 2009 issue of the Whole Dog Journal:

http://www.whole-dog-journal.com/is...ine-Health-News-and-Chew-Recalls_16144-1.html

I may have to board my dogs for two days in February, but otherwise mine do not stay in kennels. This year I will decline vaccinating against CI.

Thanks, Katherine...that was very informative! Thanks also to Dr. Mac. We all appreciate your expertise and opinion. Merry Christmas to you and your pups too!

Speaking of vaccines and the potential for overvaccination, we had our first case of canine influenza confirmed in Rhode island last week.

I frankly do not know whether to start routinely vacccinating for it or not, so thought I would ask.

is there currently canine influenza in your area?
Does your veterinarian routinely vaccinate, or offer it as an option?
Did you get your dog vaccinated?
Thanks in advance for any info here. - Dr. Mac
I would make the same recommendation (or less) that I do for people. In general no. However if your dog is old and in an environment of exposure it might be a good idea. If you have a couple of pups that only see each other and are in good health I would not do it. I tend to look at risk benefit, there is always risk in any medical/medicine procedure and the benefit needs to exceed it.

My vet isn't one to push unnecessary vaccinations on dogs but she considers Edan to be in a "high risk" category because we are always around larger numbers of other dogs because of classes and agility trials.

I do vaccinate Edan for that very reason.
