Cant do it.

Bailey's best friend is a shiba. He is very nice, but is a little possessive with toys, water bowl and his parents. Although, he is not possessive when Bailey plays with his toys. He just loves her.

The good thing about shibas are they don't bark much.

Wow I did not know all of that. I told her last night she should not get a shiba. I decided to fully keep the mini aussie. To answer some questions: From the research I have done they are, like said earlier in this post, the exact same thing as an aussie in a smaller package. 3 dogs under 1yr is def going to be a nightmare...2 puppies already were. This does keep me entertained though. When it gets hard I just keep thinking how much better it will be to have 3 great companions for the next decade

Haha I totally missed that somehow. She definitley needs a furby instead. My wife and I are learning so much that we didnt know from these forums and are starting to really doubt that her sister needs a puppy. I think we are going to tell her maybe she should start with a kitty or something that kind of takes care of itself aside from the basics

How old is she? If she just wants company, I'd recommend a cat, maybe a year or two, from a rescue. We have wonderful ones at our shelters, and they only run $10. It would already be litter-trained. Puppies take enormous commitment. if we hadn't had adults at home when we got each of ours, it would really have been hard. Even then, the puppy raiser spent loads of time with the new baby.

I'm here to agree with Chris, again. A young cat would be a good place for her to start. If she can keep the litter box clean for a couple of year, then it might be time to consider the commitment a puppy requires. The Furby offer still stands.

Yup! What Chris said. A cat is a much better idea for the SIL.

And...it is much better for the SIL to pick out her own pet. I am really biased against giving pets to people for presents. Unless of coarse, it is a parent giving it to the child, and the parent is going to be the responsible party anyway.

I'm with Danisgoat!

I really think people should pick out their own pets. And I think if you have children, its a good idea to make them part of the process too. Gives a sense of ownership and responsibility (though final decision goes to Mom and Dad).

I don't know how old your SIL is, so I'm not going to question why you were buying her a dog for Xmas, but if she still wants one and you are still prepared, you can give her an "IOU" for the puppy or kitty of her dreams. And then think of the fun of looking around for her perfect pet.

And congrats on your new furball!

Margaret....somewhere down in the basement, we've got a Furbee....I'm wondering if it won't make a great toy for the boys! Since noone else seems to want them! (Do you remember the frenzy over those things way back! People were fighting over them at the toy stores!)

I remember the craze well. I think I may have a mini Furby around here, too. Get it out for the boys, but don't leave them unattended with it. I put the batteries in mine for Phebe and she acted like it was possessed. I don't know what's involved in Sheltie-style exorcism, but I imagine it to be vigorous and zoomie-filled.

Great idea, Barb!
