Car riding equipment

I use the Vari crates (Finnie in the back and Piper in the front seat) but after watching the video of the dog busting through the side of the crate I'm definitely moving Piper's crate to the back seat! With the seat backs in front of the crates they'd be more protected (and the crates are also belted in).
P.S. I drive a Ford Focus...it's got good storage in the hatch but definitely not a good car if you've got dogs! With two crates in the backseat it takes up ALL the room lol.

I would recommend reviewing the Center for Pet Safety's review of the Ruff Tough Kennel as both models tested failed to meet crash testing standards: http://www.centerforpetsafety.org/test-results/crates/2015-crate-study-results/#RuffTough

I would encourage anyone considering the use of wire kennels/crates in the car to review the crash test results from the Center for Pet Safety. Not sure if that's what you meant by "metal cage" but the wire ones are one of the most dangerous options for restraining a dog in the car: http://www.centerforpetsafety.org/t...-crate-study-results/#MidwestWireKennelV15570
If I recall correctly the RTK kennels only failed at the doors because they can open either direction- I actually like that flexibility. The last reviews I saw, only the Gunner kennels were approved. Those did not exist when I bought the RTK and they are way more expensive- not that the RTK crates are cheap.

I'm going to trya Kurgo Tru-Fit harness system. It is crash tested and would seem to not allow much room to move. Funny, I drove a big Town &Country today (much smoother ride and tether does not allow reach to windows) and Beau was really good. Unfortunately, it is not something I can drive most times as it is my son's car. Hum.

I won't trust the Kurgo harnesses ever again. I only found out it fail independent crash testing after the one we had the webbing tear on ours when I stopped short one day. My sheltie was okay in the end but needed a few chiro appointments. I would have hated to find out what would have happened in an accident. It was after this that I started really doing my research on restraints.
