Car sick

Ginger is one remedy. I used a travel remedy from Plush Puppy that worked well for Layla.

I use to use the Plush Puppy travel remedy when mine got car sick and it worked very well. They did grow out of it; which is good because we do a LOT of traveling.

Ginger Snap cookies are also supposed to work very well since ginger is a natural sedative for upset stomachs.

Our vet said it was not a good idea to try and "get them used to it" by taking short car rides. They still get sick and they begin to associate the car with puking.

She recommended giving our puppy a quarter tablet of Dramamine about an hour before the car ride, which we tried the last vet trip, but he puked anyway.

You could also try those mint flavored dog biscuits (for fresh breath) as mint will settle stomachs too, if the ginger doesn't work.

Lexi had this problem for about a year. Couldn't even go 1/2 mile w/o throwing up. Now she's a great traveler. So, there is hope.

Pyper was the opposite. No car sickness as a puppy, but at about 1 year, she started. Now, as long as I don't feed her right before the trips she's OK....most of the time.

Has anyone had a puppy outgrow carsickness as the breeder indicated?

Yes. Cisco was awful as a puppy. It was pretty gross. Unfortunately for him, we had shows to travel to! Lol. He eventually got over it, though.

I think your vet can prescribe you something that will help with it. You just have to make sure it's in their system before you get in the car or they will just throw the pill up. There are also natural remedies as well if you don't want to go the prescription route.

Liam was really bad for being sick and drooling. He doesn't get sick now, but he does drool. My truck seats are stained. He sits on the front seat and I keep a cut open garbage bag on the seat with a blanket on top of it. Natalie just drools but she in on the floor at the back, which is easy to mop up. Emma does nothing. I did try a Thundershirt on Liam a couple of times and it seemed to help.

Granite is 7 months old now and still throws up during almost every single car ride. Not quite sure what the solution is yet.

alfie was REALLY bad as a puppy. He'd throw up if we drove on the highway!! He's now 2.5yrs old and still throws up if the road is really bumpy or if we drive up to the mountains, but thankfully highways are fine now. I'd say they do outgrow it, but some completely and some not. We always travel long distance with an empty stomach, and I suggest you invest in a car carrier. Mine looks like this: http://lh4.ggpht.com/-x3vxqt6wmb0/TnIpiB-ZdoI/AAAAAAAACeI/mN7OScJ6n04/s640/P1240355.JPG

Compare to when he was a puppy, I'd say he outgrew 80% of it already. We only had one accidents so far this year!! So the best thing to do is to just wait for them to outgrow it, prevent and or clean up the mess!

I'm not sure if it made a difference- but all my pups were in a car carrier when they were first riding in the car and they are all great car travelers
Cranberry
Jocu

Dixie was older when I got her but she still rode in a crate for a while before she got to ride with the seatbelt.

Jocu actually had his first ride outside of the crate last weekend- he was a very well behaved boy too:winkgrin:

Riley was carsick a couple weeks ago. I started giving him some pumpkin and ginger dog treat that also had probiotics in them and he has been fine in the car ever since. We had a 5 hour car ride up North last weekend and he was fine. Maybe his carsickness was a rare occurance but I think I will continue to give the treats for a couple days before and after long car rides.

MacGreggor was sick until he reached his first birthday. He would either throw up or drool like a Saint Bernard! Now he is fine and infact wants to get in the car and go for a ride.
