Car training

my old sheltie was the same way. I mean she never whined or barked since she really wasn't a barker. But she insisted on being on the drivers lap while they were driving. I guess she felt like she was assisting haha. Or she would sit on the floor, on my lap, back on the floor, to the back.. ughhh it was annoying.. hopefully when I get another sheltie the poor thing wont do that. I am going to try and drive with the puppy as much as possible haha.
 
We had a 4 hour ride home from the breeder and not a peep. :rolleyes2: It was after that, when the problems started!
 
We've never had problems with Sadie in the car.

We decided before we got her that if we got a dog it would come with us everywhere. When we did get her she started going on car rides at least once per day, which wasn't hard since everyone wanted to see her. At first she'd sit on mine or my husband's lap then eventually I got a harness for her and would harness her in the passenger seat or back seat. When she was small she was taught that she had to lie down in the car and its pretty much stuck with her.

Now she prefers to be in the back seat and is allowed to sit or lie down, usually she prefers to lie down though. She doesn't make a sound, you'd never know there was a dog back there!
 
Annie Laurie is a dream -- sits in her seat, ok with the harness. Layla hates the harness but puts up with it. She really isn't happy unless she's in my lap. In DC traffic, that can get you killed. :uhoh:
 
Right, that's what I'm talking about! I have Long Island traffic to contend with. Not a good place to have a 3 month old sheltie squirming on your lap! :eek2:
 
Despite being great in the car, Sadie HATES her harness for some reason. I think I'm going to have to get her a crate for the back seat so that she's comfortable AND safe.
 
Consider a soft-sided - it won't scratch up your car, is very light and folds up to less than 1 inch thick. If you plan to use it alot, you can leave it in your trunk. If folds up in seconds.

Mine has some hooks and straps, so in theory, I could also attach it to the backseat somehow if I chose to.
