Casey is MDR1 Mutant/Normal

Just got MDR1 gene test back on my 11 week old puppy Casey. He is Mutant/Normal: "These dogs carry the mutation and may pass on the mutant gene to their offspring. These dogs may experience toxicity after normal doses of loperamide, some anticancer drugs, and high doses of ivermectin".

Anyone have a Mutant/Normal dog? What are the ramifications of this? I know there is quite a list of medications to avoid.

I had Randy, my sheltie I lost in January to Lymphoma, tested when he started on the CHOP protocol. He was normal/normal thankfully.

Deska is the same but I still find he has MDR1 sensitivity to certain drugs - it's why I got him tested in the first place. Maybe his sensitivity is not as high as it would be if was double positive, not sure. But I play it on the safe side - avoid what I can and if he needs a drug he could be sensitive to start with a low dose.

ACP (tranquiliser) and butorphanol (pre-op sedative). They are the only meds on the MDR1 list we've tried though. He was given ACP for fireworks - a full dose gave him bad hallucinations and unable to control his bladder, he could only manage 1/8th a dose. Because of Deska's elbow problems he's had to have anesthetic so after the first couple of times when he was over sedated on a full dose we avoid pre-ops.

I have a mutant/mutant Collie. She had trouble with her debark, as I hadn't had her tested yet, and the fast acting anesthesia they give them is on the list. She did fine with her spay. I just don't give her the drugs on the list. It's really not that big a thing, as long as you know.

Angus is a mutant/normal as well, vet is very carful on anesthetics, uses propofol if he needs anesthesia.

We stay away from the drugs on the list. Be sure to look up new lists often as new drugs are added or better ideas of doses of the others may be refined.

Really just being aware as well as your vet you should be good.
