Casual Barf

Abigail's Mom

Abigail is 9 months old. She is on Wellness adult food, 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the afternoon. For the past two mornings Abigail eats her breakfast and then about 2 hours later after playing around and chewing on her toys, she will very casually barf up a few morsels of food and then continues playing around as if nothing happened. She does not do this after lunch.
I can't figure out why? Should I not feed her first thing in the morning? She has been on Wellness puppy and we recently switched to Wellness adult. She has always been a "casual barfer" but I am just concerned if this is normal??
Thanks for all of your expert opinions :wink2:

Dr. Shelli (justicemom) would probably give you the best advice on this, but I would suggest adding some acidophilis to her food. It's a natural supplement that will help her gastrointestinal tract, and you can buy it in any drugstore. You can also buy a good probiotic to add to her food -- Dr. Goodpet makes a great one, or Vibrant Pets, which many of us use, includes probiotic in their supplement. She may just be reacting to the food change. Did you transition her gradually? Even if you did, it could be the result of that.

I can't comment on the normality of casual barfing. I can say that my pup doesn't do it though.

That said I have seen a dog eat his food so fast that he ended up throwing up later. I have also seen a dog that loved to eat cat food and cat poo, he would gorge himself on both while his owners were asleep. The next morning he'd eat breakfast and then he'd be all happy and playful....thats about the time he'd start throwing up in various places and just continue on about his buisness like nothing happened.

The owners did take precautions to keep the dog out of that stuff, but sometimes he'd outsmart them.

If it's just a few peices of food it sounds to me like maybe she's eating fast? you could try something like the steggin egg dog toy to help slow her down.

Hmmm I'm not really sure.

Bailey is one years old and is also eating Wellness adult kibble. She's about the same size as Abigail too. Could it be too much food? Bailey only gets 1/4 cup twice a day. She does get a lot of treats though.

Can't say it is all that abnormal. It could be a sign of some inflammation in the stomach or espopahgus or motility issues. My dogs have occasional bouts of this usually when they over eat or eat too fast. In the morning she could be more hungery. If it has only been 2 days try giving her smaller more frequent meals(ie same amount daily but 4 meals instead of 2) and see if that straightens her out. If any other signs start occuring that would be more concerning.

Emma occasionally brings up some food, but it is usually if she has had a little more than normal for her. I feed her just less than one cup, 1/2 in morning and 1/2 at night. That would be my question too - did she eat too much or too fast.

Thanks everyone for you responses.
I give Abigail 1/2 cup in the morning and 1/2 cup in the afternoon. She does seem to gobble it down rather quickly so I am going to try giving her smaller portions and hold off on her breakfast until she calms down from being in her charger (crate) all night. She eats the same food and the same amount for lunch and she does not give that back.
Thanks again.

Beckon was a casual barfer, too. He's grown out of it now. I think they get excited, bounce around, and...URP!! I never worried about it -- I learned from Layla that nothing throws up as casually as a puppy!
