CGN This Saturday, any tips?

With the hand off to the person for the isolation, they make no eye contact at all with the dog. When I did it, they stood against the wall. When I was ready I handed off each dog, told them to stay and left. The person doesn't move - it is almost like having the dog tied up. Mine all had their eyes fixed on the doorway I disappeared through. Liam did a little whining and then ended up lying down. The two girls sat.

Hi Everyone,

The test is actually on Nov 23, so I still have a couple of days to prepared, sorry I wasn't very clear on the first post.

Congratulations - knew you would be just fine. We didn't have to loose leash walk outside - we did it inside, with no distractions.

I can only imagine how proud you are of your Sammy.

I just put CGN on all three of mine last Saturday - Natalie's was tougher because of all the confusion going on when she was tested and she had been scared by a barking dog.

Ronna,

Can I ask if you have received your certificate from CGC? I am still waiting for mine, and its taking longer than I thought it would. Not sure if they are just slow, or have it been lost in the mail. We did our test on Nov 23. Thanks.

I was just thinking this morning that I would have to look back through the posts and find out how you got on with the CGN test as I wasn't on the forum for a while and then saw your thread this evening! MANY CONGRATULATIONS on passing, that is a real measure of achievement and reward for all the hard work you have put in with Sammy's training!! :smile2::smile2:

Do you have any other goals to work towards?

Thank you Julia.

The only other goal I have in mind is for Sammy to become a therapy dog. Although, at the moment, I am not sure how I can work towards it. Some places won't consider any dog that's under 2 years old, so I guess I have a year to prepare for it.

Plus in most cases they need a dog that's absolutely calm and under control, Sammy can get excited very quickly once we're outside the door, I don't know how I can manage that yet. Maybe as she gets older she will become more manageable.

Nearest to my home, I know St Johns Ambulance has therapy dog service and a local hospital also has a team, though both are quite demanding in terms of time commitment, which I am worried that won't work well with my own schedule.

I keep reading there is a demand for (volunteering) therapy dog service, but I can't seem to find any help getting into it. You'd think if there is such a demand, they would be actively setting up (free) training and assessment so more people can get into it. But instead everywhere I looked, they demand when you bring you dog to their test your dog is already extremely well trained and behaving. That just keeps people away.

(Oops, sorry for the rant)
