Chelsea does NOT want to play?!?

ohhh. I understand, My Marcus was a champion show dog who was being shipped all around as a stud.He spent several years showing and procreating before I got him. He was 5 years old when I got him. When I got him I also took in a female that was also a show dog who could not carry a successful pregnancy so she was also given to me along with Rachie would could not carry a pregnancy and was a champion show dog. Marcus and Kimmi were the alpha of the group and took it very seriously until I had both Rachie and Kimmi and Marcus' son Yoda fixed. Marcus was pretty ill when I got him so he could not be neutered until he got better. Kimmi and Rachie used to play like mad with Marcus' son afterwards but Rachie contracted pyometra and became the "do not play with me" dog. Poor Marcus never wanted to play, but as my herd grew he tried but no one wanted to play with him. He would never fetch, look at a toy or play even when a 3 month old joined and buddied up to him. Marcus passed 2 years ago and he never ever played the 4.5 years I had him, We tried but he never would, I think he thought he was too regal :) lol

BEAUTIFUL babies!! Thanks for sharing those. Chelsea has that regal, looking down her nose at me stance down perfectly! Especially if I am trying to get her to play.

I swear, I do believe Chelsea can read.:eek2: I guess I should check my online log to see if she is going online during the night! This morning I picked up the ball from the bedroom she takes her toys to hide and just out of habit I bounced it on the floor towards her as I walked out. To my shock, she pounced on the ball, shook her head with it in her mouth, then let it roll towards me, all the while watching me with this look in her eyes like...." I read what you have been saying about me and I CAN play if I want to..I just don't wanna." Then she walked over to her favorite "veg-out" spot, plopped down with a sigh...like, now did we get this settled??

hahahaha... I swear sometimes they can be so sarcastic with you. If my sheltie wasn't in the mood to play or deal with you she would look at you and when your paying attention to her she would turn around and stick her tail in the air like.. HMMMph I am done with you and walk away shaking her butt more than usual. Thats so funny.

I was told by a trainer that tug is one of the best ways of bonding with your dog since it is a very strong instinct in most dogs. Perhaps you could try getting her a rope of some kind and encourage her to play tug with you? Maybe if she learns that tug is fun then she'll want to play with other toys too.

If she likes running perhaps you could try taking an agility course with her or teach her to play flyball? Both are very fun and flyball wouldn't involve you running quite as much :smile2:

Callie doesn't play either- we bought her a tug toy- which she'll very rarely chew on. doesn't chase toys or catch stuff. she likes her treats and her cuddle time and her walks. those seem to make her happy so I don't worry too much about her lack of play.

I guess I should just not worry about her lack of play time. I don't think I would have even thought about it if she hadn't played so hard with her mom. Now about the only thing she likes to play with is my feet! :smile2: I have tried the tug rope and she just sniffs it and acts like she might take it until I pull and then she is like....fine, take it. :sleepy:

It has taken the carpenters that are working on my nonprofit project over three months of trying every day to pet her to actually let them approach her SLOOOOWLY and pet her. Once they pet, she will keep coming back for more....she loves being petted. But EVERY day is is almost like we start over. After 6 months she still will not actually go up to them.

Shelties have so much personality, don't they? I have enjoyed reading the antics of your dogs! Thanks for the laughs! :biggrin2:

Callie won't approach people for love/petting either- she has started within the last few months to solicit lovin from me which makes me feel like she has really adjusted to living with us. She'll let people pet her- still kinda shy around most men though. when we go to the pet stores, I always give the male employees treats to give to her. sometimes she takes them, other times not. but we'll keep working at it. :smile2:

Guess Chelsea is not the Long Ranger!
While I am airing Chelsea's "dirty laundry" :eek2: Here is her latest "trick" For some time, when I get her food ready to put down in front of her, I tell her sit, she does nicely, I say, "Be a lady" and she will sit perfectly poised while I put her food down, straighten up, etc, etc. She waits until I say Bon Appétit, then she digs in. Ok, this routine has been a twice daily event for months. Recently, at times when I tell her sit, she just looks at me with an expression that means one of two things....."Done that, been there, bored with it" :sleepy: OR... I have no idea what you are talking about??? :confused2:
I have been just telling her over and over until she finally sits, but was wondering why she would just decide at times..."Naw"...

Chelsea, my puppers do the same thing. I make them all sit when food comes out and they usually all will sit. FoxMan (he's my troublemaker) will not sit many times. I honestly think it is that he is bored. I had to change things a little to get him to sit now. I will get one of his favorite toys and play with him shortly before chowtime and now when I tell him to sit he readily sits. I think a change in the routine did it since shelties do have a tendency to get bored if their routiune is always the same. I was told shelties need a job and stimulation to be happy. It seems to have worked for me...for now. I have been thinking of new ways to keep him busy before dinner just to vary his routine
