So I have just been hearing that we have an outbreak of CIRDC here...one Sheltie breeder is in lockdown because somehow it got into her kennel. I am considering pulling Blueberry from the show in September. Last thing I need is to take her to a dog show and risk all my dogs getting sick. My understanding of this virus is that bordatella vaccine will not protect a dog from this. This Sheltie breeder was at a handling class 2 weeks ago (last time I went) and now she has sick dogs...I’m leery of even attending this dog facility even though I know how well they clean.
What are your thoughts? What would you do?
 
My vet warned the practice of an outbreak in the area a few weeks ago......
"What we casually call “kennel cough” is actually CIRDC or Canine Infectious Respiratory Disease Complex. There are major and minor players in this complex. The major players are bordetella bronchiseptica, canine distemper virus, parainfluenza, adenovirus, and canine flu. These can be deadly and are the ones we have vaccines for. The minor players are mycoplasma, corona virus (different one) streptococcus, herpes, and other secondary bacterial infections. The vaccines work well to protect our dogs from the deadly pathogens. It doesn’t mean they are protected from the minor pathogens we have no vaccine for. The current strain is consistent with a mycoplasma infection and is doxycycline sensitive. This strain is extremely infectious and contagious."

I did ask at my training class which is held at a kennel. They have not had any issues but do know a kennel in the area had it. I did attend class this last session - we have the next 2 weeks off.
 
Kennel cough is going through the shows here like wildfire from what I hear. I haven't been getting mine the bordatella intranasal vaccine for a few years but I've just finished getting all six into the vet to have it since I'm showing next week. Our vets do either the intranasal or the oral one, but my vet has told me the intranasal is more effective and that's what we've always used. It's a simple squirt in the nose and mine tolerate it well.

I would not take a dog to a show without that vaccine at the moment, and you have to get it for every dog in your house because one dog can bring it home, so just vaccinating the one showing won't protect them. It's true there is more than one strain, but the vaccine will protect them against most. I would also make sure any dog showing has had the flu vaccine, since that runs through shows too. Again, every dog in the house needs to have it to be protected.
 
Lisa, I just heard more about this from someone in Canada. Apparently it is not kennel cough but a new strain of virus that is highly contagious. A kennel cough vaccine will not help with that. If it's still going on when your show date approaches I would not take Blueberry. One show is not worth the risk.

What we have going around here in the states has been diagnosed as kennel cough. But we have a lot of Canadian people and dogs at our shows in the Northeast, so I really hope it is not morphing down here, although I'm sure it's inevitable. In which case, I'll be staying home too. Between this and the Delta virus variant going on I wonder how many shows and events will be canceled this season again!

That’s my plan Ann…this show closes on August 30th and if there are still cases I will probably pull her then. If I don’t pull her by then I’ll wait until the show to decide. The Sheltie breeder who has it in her kennel said her dogs that were vaccinated for kennel cough didn’t get this but that could just be luck. I was thinking I could vaccinate Piper and Finnie and cross my fingers lol…not sure though seeing as how it’ll probably be our only show this year.
 
We've had a big outbreak of kennel cough here as well. Montys dog park that I had been taking him to got closed down due a ton of dogs catching it there. I suppose it's only a matter of time before we get the strain you have mentioned, if it's not already here. I have Monty vaccinated against regular kennel cough so hopefully he should be ok.

I think you're doing the right thing, just leave it as late as possible, see how things are going and then make the call. If there's any doubt then yeah, it's probably best to wait until the next one. The good thing with Blueberry is she will have a ton more shows you'll get to do.
