CJ's First Full CPE Trial

Another question I just thought of...if you (or Glen) are running a sequence with CJ and she misses a jump, do you turn her back around and go back and get it?

For dogs who are very sensitive, and those who shut down when a "mistake" is made, it's often better to not go back to get a jump (or any obstacle) after it has been missed. Just keep going while the dog is running and upbeat. The dogs start to hesitate and question themselves when they are circled back around like "Oh no, I messed up...this isn't fun anymore" sort of thing.

I totally agree, Ember is that way if I make even the slightest indictation that she didn't do something right, she would go into shut down mode. It didn't take much at all. Sometimes I swear it was just an intake of my breathe. I could even get mad at myself or it would be the same result.

Now i don't even say Opps anymore with her. I usually just keep going. Sometimes I break it off but I always play with her and she never knows she didn't do it right. I laways keep her engaged. I then run it again and reward her big time if she does it right. We I focused more on keeping her happy than doing it perfect. Besides 99% of the time it me not her that caused the mess up. When she broke out of her kennel and chased Diva though the weaves yesterday she had a party at the end of the poles. Time was I would have gotten on her about that. I guess I have let her get a bit naughty but her attitude has improved so much.

Yes, he was doing this and we already figured out that was a bad idea; however, we also don't want to teach her that she can ignore an obstacle that is presented directly in front of her. For now, we'll have to go the route of moving on and worry about fixing the performance later.

When I was running her, I was also calling her back but it was because she would complete an obstacle facing toward the exit of the ring and bolt toward the exit so I'd call her back with something like 'CJ, here. Look. There's another jump here.' in a really bubbly tone. You'll see when I finally get the video edited.

She's a work in progress. She has great potential if we can work her through her discomfort. Unfortunately, the only way to work through this sort of thing is to put her in the situation and make it as positive as possible for her.

Y'know, when I was trying to get speed on Koji, I remember my trainers and friends at trials saying to me during (training class) or after (trial), "I didn't hear you!!!" Because at the time, I was supposed to be all bubbly and happy with Koji so he'd move faster, be more into it, etc.

Trust me, I'm so not like that. hahaha. But, once I tried doing it, it helped. Bleah. Bubbly I am not. lol. Especially at 8am. Tell Glen he needs to be bubbly.

our trainer has recently told me to keep going when Cran screws up- not because of "hesitate and question themselves when they are circled back around like "Oh no, I messed up...this isn't fun anymore" sort of thing."
but because he'll learn that he can control 'the game'.
her BC has done some stuff like that. I think the BC's that Cran was around as a puppy have corrupted him:winkgrin:
