Cleaning Sheltie Ears

As Sadie gets older I'm noticing her ears are more oily. I recently trimmed the fur inside to neaten them but they're also very oily, should I clean them or only if I notice dirt or wax?

I also wondered how often to clean them. I know ears can be sensitive and don't want to start cleaning them too often.
 
Hi! One of my girls has very dirty ears too. I only clean her ears when I notice them getting dirty. I have a cleaning solution that is just for the dogs ears and I got it from the vet office. You may want to get some from your vet and ask them how often you should clean them. I probably don't clean Zoe's enough. I will take a look at the cleaning solution tonight and get the name of it for you if you would like. Hope that helps. :biggrin2:
 
Gio's ears get very greasy as well. I asked a groomer friend of mine what she recommended, she owns Cockers so is very familiar with greasy stinky ears.

She said that washing the ears with a gentle dog shampoo once a week works really well. Then in between times wipe them down with a 25% vinegar solution. I make up a cup of solution, 1/4 cup of white vinegar and 3/4 cup water, then put it in a squeeze bottle. Use a paper towel or cotton swab to wipe the solution on the inside of the ear flap and the hair in front of the ear. It will kill the bacteria that makes the ears stinky without irritating the skin if used once every day or two.

Gio's ears don't get as greasy as a Cocker's would, so his ears get a soapy scrub about once a week and I use the vinegar solution once or twice a week.

They never appear dirty or waxy, just recently I've noticed more oil. I've been trying to space out her baths more, which is why they're probably more oily than usual. If they don't ever look dirty/waxy I'm wondering if I should keep an eye on them and just wipe her ears whenever I bath her.
 
I also wondered what products/methods people use for ear cleaning. I looked online and found several different methods:

Equal Parts White Vinegar and Water (as GeeRome also suggested)

Equal Parts Apple Cider Vinegar and Water (AC vinegar naturally fights fungus)

Use fragrance free baby wipes.

Buy ear cleaning solution

Vinegar had occured to me but I think that apple cider vinegar is an even better idea because of its fungus killing properties. Baby wipes are definitely convenient though. I'm guessing I'll end up trying the AC vinegar....
 
I have an aloe-based ear wash for the really filthy times. Otherwise, I use the fragrance-free wipes.
