Clicker Training?

Hey Ya'll!!

I was wondering if anyone can give me tips/advice on clicker training. I have heard of it, but I don't know details and would really like some information on it. Is it worth it? Shiloh will be 10 weeks old tomorrow, thats not too young to start clicker training is it?

Thanks for any advice/tips/etc!!!

I have seen a video of a 14 week old pup doing some amazing things with clicker training. So I wouldn't say 10 was too young.

The idea is simple, when you click you are promising your dog a treat. And at the same time the click is like a bookmark that marks a desireable behavior.

I'd reccomend getting a book. One that seems to have gotten great reviews is called "Clicking with your dog". Most libraries have it. It's ment for kids from what I've heard but sometimes us older adults need to be taught things like we are children too :)

Other than that the first step in training is to get a clicker (if you get the starmark clicker it comes with a small instruction sheet on how to teach some basic commands and introduce your dog to the clicker, and I've seen it at petco, petsmart, and walmart). Then get your dog to understand that when you click he/she gets a treat.

I love Clicker Training. I've used it for my little guy since he was 7 months old.

The best online resource for clicker training information is at www.clickertraining.com.

Perhaps the most important thing to remember with clicker training is that the clicker sound marks the behavior you want. You have to start by "Priming the clicker" - basically click and give the dog a treat. Do this about 10 times and stop for a little while then repeat. THey will very quickly associate the sound of the click with getting a treat.

After priming the clicker, you can start teach things like sit, down stay, etc. Use the click to mark the behavior you want.

YAYYYY, clicker training! Thank you wanting to try it out!!!

I am a reformed, due to clicker training... it's what started it all for me to change my ways from compulsion and correcting dogs behaviours by physical manipulation and choke chains to using positive enforcement only (ok, but now and then I still need work, a little... lol)!

Clicker training is VERY good and known to work for for tricks, BUT it works towards correcting behaviours as well! I finally have great success after Toffee was so mean to dogs and snapped at every dog for even looking at him... and was super reactive on leash.... now he only wants to throw down puppies who are in his face, lol so work in progress,... at least he stops before he gets into a huge match with the pitbulls at the dogpark.:rolleyes2:
I took him to a agility trial yesterday and he never ONCE tried to eat any other dogs or made any move towards them!!
Other than that what Silaria said is what I woulda said!!! Just not as well LOL

I've been wanting to try clicker traning with Emma, but it's been finding the time to work with her on a consistent basis. Now that things are a little slower for the summer at worK, I hope to do so.

It's really funny about the clicker training. The instructor for the classes I had signed Emma up for had clicker trained a chicken, but seemed to discourage us from doing it with our dogs. I got the impression that it was not something she was too keen on. But I seen evidence of clicker training everywhere. I am planning on trying it and with the tip of training to clicker first we should have no problems.e

Wonderful technique.we have use it here, since these pups were first brought home.We started with priming,as was mentioned earliar. They get the hint very quickly, that a treat will follow for good behavior.

I do a variation on clicker training. I say, "yes" to mark the behavior and I only use treats maybe one day out of 7 in training. I use praise instead and lots of ruff rubs and ear scratches for rewards.

McKinley is a mess maker but he is a nicely behaved mess maker. If you can "click" and do other stuff at the same time (I am not coordinated at all), it is the way to go in training as far as I am concerned.

Thanks so much ya'll!!! I will definitely make a trip to Petsmart and pick up a clicker for sure. And hopefully, I can coordinate myself enough to use it appropriately

We love clicker training! I try to incorporate it into my daily interactions with the dogs and have one or two 5 to 10 mins sessions a day for teaching tricks. I keep some treats in a pocket or in jars around the house and loop a hair tie through my clicker so I can wear it on my arm.

I also recently bought a "crafter's apron" from etsy.com which is a half apron with some pockets in the front which i can wear at home and carry clicker + treats everywhere! Anytime the dogs want anything, Dogs SIT! Click + treat, and off I go about my things again! At the end of the day, integrating training into daily life, where the results of training are more useful, should be what we aim to do.
