Club Practice: Do I do the DW?

Dog Walk

I am wondering, when I said I was going to train him at the end of the DW, instead of the full thing, at practice, did you think I meant I was placing him on the end, in a 2o2o position?[/QUOTE]

No , not placing him on the end of the DW but allowing him to get on by himself in the 2020.I loving Racheal Saunders dvd on Bridging the gap for contacts. It is awesome.Right now Riley's mom is borrowing it.

I'm going to borrow it from my club's library. Hopefully no one has it out right now. I'm also getting a foundation one, just to be sure I'm doing things right.

I am waiting for contact course that SG promised with baited breath:smile2:
actually our contacts are not a problem at this stage but as usual this course will be much more than just contacts and I really want some clear logical and scientific explanation of agility what when and how.
as for new behaviors as far as I am aware rules are you start increasing your criteria if you have 80% of success. You change habitat when you have full DASH- desire, accuracy, speed in first Habitat. Going around and training mediocre behavior everywhere will lead you to mediocre behavior everywhere IMHO

IMO, you should deffo try it out outside, too. It's diferent location and dog needs to know it's all the same no matter where he's running. Though, if you don't have a cue, I would definitely do DW for now - only shape the behavior at the end of DW. After that I'd take "step by step" approach, put the dog a bit higher at the end of DW etc. Then I'd add a cue and if he understood well, I'd slowly try whole DW. BUT SHaron has a definitely point that you shouldn't let dog to get back on the contact if he blew it. You have to take WHOLE obstacle again, because in a trial it'd be an elimination.

ITA. I can't get full speed indoors (at home) and other things. Maybe I'll bring my little board to practice and start that away from the main ring to get him acclimated a bit to "outdoors" on the board. THEN move to the DW.

I'd say indoors, with speed, excitement, getting him as revved up as I can indoors, he's about 90% or higher. And when he slips up, it's because his back end usually falls off (no rear-end awareness which I'm working on now too).

I guess I'm not understanding. So, you're saying that you were told and you don't, allow Sting to jump up on the side of the DW to train the 2o2o position. I'm not talking about him breaking a 2o2o or blowing it. I'm talking about training the 2o2o position. Is that correct?

Because from everything I have seen online, and from big name trainers, they all suggest back-chaining the behavior. First you teach 2o2o position at the end of the DW by having them jump up from the side. Then you place dog higher up on the DW so they get more of a slope and speed, and have them get into position. Then if you have specific equipment, you have them get up even higher. THEN you have them run across.

So, I guess I don't get it. I mean, there's no way I can go from a flat board or no board to a full DW to teach position. That seems a bit extreme.

Please understand I am not placing Koji into position if he blows his contacts. I am not allowing him to get back on if he blows his contacts either. Yes, I did it once and remembered that was bad, so I don't do that anymore. So, I'm not totally sure where it came from that I was allowing or placing him back on if he blows his contacts.

I was just having this converstion with a girl who I use to train with. She now trains elsewhere and the person she trains with teaches it the way I taught mine.Correct I do not train the end behavior on the DW but on a board.I was taught the same with Shadow from a board and I always get told of how awesome his contacts are.Ask my freind Anna and she will tell you how awesome they are.I to have seen some of the top trainers train that way using the end of the DW for the 2020 contact. There is all kinds of ways to teach the DW (and that is why I always say everyone trains different). You have to do what works for you and what is best for you.I will say (and that I guess I am bragging)that I would put him up against any dog on here for contacts be it running ones or 2020.

Just a bit more clarification and we're good. ;)

By "board" are you talking about a flat board on the ground? Or maybe a board on bricks but flat, right? not angled?

just to add to confusion some of our anecdotal evidence. Che and I practiced 2o2o on a travel plank and at home on the stairs. Che has natural running style which I was not sure I wanted to mess with but wanted to keep 2o2o in our bag of tricks. After some time Che generalized 2o2o to offering on every board, including DW Aframe and teeter. We only kept teeter. Now Che has been off agility and just starting to come out of his injury so I am not planning to worry about contacts for while. With Leo I do the same. I teach both boys rear end awareness a lot.

Yes, by "board"I am talking one flat on the ground.Teaching them to mount the side of the DW for training the 2020 also teaches them to creep down the end when you put it all together.
