Collar/leads for Rally

Ooo...something to think about. Maybe I'll take Miko with me and see what he likes best as I walk around. :) Thanks!

Definitely give that one a try. Nike is super sensitive (and shy), and awhile back I realized that he was extremely nervous in class because he was associating his regular buckle collar with going places (which is still very nerve wracking for him, it's been a long road). I switched him to a super light choke and he's a different dog. He associates that collar (and a really light leather lead) with obedience, which is a joy for him.

I'd agree. I'm also teaching him what clicker training is, so I"m using that to help him accept a lead/collar and associate that with good fun training. He had yummy Cheerios last night for his first session, just so it's something he loves. :) It went well. But he still hated having a collar on. I'll go find one this weekend. I saw a lightweight choke (use it loose, not as a choke) "chain", may try that one.

I think, like Nike, Miko is associating "collar" with choke chain and old school training. I was telling the manager at my day care about Miko (asked her for the printout for clicker training) and she said, "how'd you train him before", and I said, "y'know, choke chain, yank" she had this look on her face :eek2: she said, "noooooooo" and I said, "yes, unfortunately. but in my defense it was 12 years ago....who know back then".

I hope I can retrain him. BTW, hard to train when it goes like this. C/T....wait....wait while he chews.....still chewing. oh gawd.....oh! C/T.....wait.....wait... LOL

Yep, when first introducing the obedience collar to Nike, I was originally C&Ting for just showing him the collar, then having the collar on (sans obedience), then for the collar on and DOING obedience, etc etc etc. It seemed to work for him, hopefully the same for your pup!

Thanks everyone for your advice. I finally got Miko an oversized choke collar made out of rolled nylon. It's light, it's loose, and he seemed to walk well with it on. Granted, he wasn't paying any attention to me, but can you blame him? We were in a pet store with lots of yummy smells.

I'll be clipping the light lead on the dead ring (as someone called it, thanks for letting me know it's name). It hangs enough that it doesn't seem to bother him. Now, it's time to clicker train him to see that it's a FUN thing. :)

I have about 6 weeks to get him Rally-O ready. LOL
