Fireworks cause dogs to flee
** More than 60 dogs have been brought to the shelter since Friday.

The Franklin County Dog Shelter has seen a spike in the number of dogs since Friday. More than 60 dogs have been brought in, the majority runaways according to interim director Don Winstel.

"We start to see a gradual increase as soon as the warm weather hits and school gets out and then the 4th of July is definitely our biggest jump," Winstel said.

He blames the problem on fireworks saying that the loud bangs and booms cause dogs to panic and flee.

"The dog isn't being bad or anything, it just doesn't know what to do and wants to get away."

He suggests bringing your dog into an interior room in your home and turning on a radio or TV to help drown out the sound of fireworks.

Ahhh poor dogs! Mine have been scared all day! I have had them in except to potty and I have to stand with them! The panting has been horrible! The pacing and whining too! It has settled down now and they are tuckered out. Resting peacefully in their beds! :sleepy:
 
Afraid of fireworks

That's so sad! Two of my shelties slept through it last night-but the third one was just beside herself-panting, pacing and barking. She couldn't settle down-just when she'd fall asleep, there'd be a big boom-and off she'd go! We finally got her to sleep when my husband held her in the dark bedroom. Poor baby! She's pooped today!
 
I just don't get why people would bring dogs to fireworks! The crowds alone would be stressful! It's not like they have any appreciation for it, like humans would!

If it is like here, its usually dogs left at home alone during fireworks that do the escaping. I was a bit annoyed this year by the number of dogs who escaped as there has been a lot of media coverage here over the last few years about dogs and fireworks - even a media campaign (with a sheltie no less). So in canberra people should have just stayed home with their pets (if the dog was young and the owners didnt know thats different). Its frustrating to have to stay home over a long weekend, but I value my dogs far more than my social life. Heck, they are my social life!
 
Poor dogs. I had a sheltie that was terrified of them too. I had to turn the music up really loud in order to muffle it, which was fine on the holdays, but then people started to shoot them off everyweekend at the cabin. I stoped going after a while because he just could not take it. It terrified him.

I guess the next obvious question is: How did they escape, anyway? Weren't they left secure in the house or a fenced yard? What's wrong with people! :(
