"Come" -- any advice?

Thank you all so much for your wonderful and helpful advice! I am so impressed by how knowledgeable you are.

at 5 months she is going through her teenage rebelious age. I would keep her on a long leash for now, reward when you have a hold of her collar, and never call her if you are not 110% sure she will come to you.

I think the "never call unless you're sure she will come" hits it on the nose. I need to be doing that. We have been practicing easy comes the last few days--just from the end of the leash to me--and she's doing pretty well with that. I tried the hall outside our condo but evidently that is too distracting. She does the "I'm free!" dance and stays out of arm's reach.

Buffy and Abby will learn we just need to be patient.

You're so right! I also appreciate the words of reassurance from Julie and Caro. Sometimes it's hard for me to know when to just be patient and when to expect more from her. It sounds like for now, I just need to be patient and up the difficulty factor later. We have plenty of time to train this... no need to be in a hurry, I guess.

Needless to say people DO look at me funny, making a fool of myself running away with high pitched lovey dovey voice calling a dog...

Yes, I do look silly sometimes. But I'd rather look silly and have my dog come! The thing is, I think the excited voice thing doesn't always impress her anymore. I need a new trick. If only I could whistle! (Maybe I should buy a whistle?)

JusticeMom and Jessica mentioned using a long line. I do have a flexi-leash that I would basically only use for this purpose. I also have a 10 ft tether. Any advice on doing long-line training? I will try using the line, especially in distracting environments. There was a chapter about this in Puppies for Dummies, maybe I should look it up.

And finally, about treats: salami, roast beef, and cheese are good ideas. Interesting point for PitterPatter... sometimes I do worry that she's getting too food motivated. We do the happy dance on her walk and she seems to love the praise. Praise is a big motivator for her too. I sometimes use toys, too... she gets sick of treats after awhile and sometimes needs something new. When do you phase out treats? My general inclination would be to wait until the behavior is consistent before doing it, but I'm not sure.

Diana,
I use a 15-20 ft chothes line cord tied to a snap. It doesn't have a handle on it so it won't get stuck as easily. I use it outdoors in the yard and let them drag it around. That way if they are wandering too far away I can step on it and reel them in. All so if they start to run away I can step on it to stop them. I have used flexis but don't like them as there a certain amount of force that is needed to pull out the lead. I love them for teaching stays and waits, formal recalls when I pull out the leash. It engages the opposition reflex ie pull against the pressure. Also they are awkward in my hands.

As far as treats. The reason we start with treats is that it a strong primary reinforcer. Meaning the dog is automaticly hardwired to work for it. Think of those things that are needed to survive. Food, water, air, and avoid of pain.

Praise(human interaction), toys and clickers are secondary reinforcers. They are at first neutral to the dogs and though pairing it with primary reinforcers, they become positive. Praise and play can become self reforcing once the dogs learns the game and for some dogs can become primary reinforcers. It really depends on how your dogs is hard wired as to how fast that happens. Some dogs have more prey(toy) drive, pack drive etc.

I usually use food until I start to see them starting to get it(around 75% response). Then I move to a random offering of treats. I might reward after 2 right responses, then 4 ,then 1, then 3, etc. The more experience the dog has the longer you can go between rewards. I reward the best responses with the food. If you get stuck on 1 reward, for 1 correct response the behavior will fade if you don't give the food. Which is what a lot of people do and why they get into trouble using food. Think vending machine vs slot machine. Which one would you keep putting money into if you lost it? :smile2:I always kept using food though out my dogs life.

We look at food rewards as their "pay check"...how long would you work with no pay? Once in awhile "bonus"...an "I appreciate the effort" pat on the back...

We also change up the treats...when they seem to lose interest or theres alot of distractions...pull out something extra special...left over steak...or roast beef. Mine love boiled chicken in garlic...or a left over hunk of meat from the grill. We use food tubes too..they love those..gotta hide them when we are'nt using them tho...they will chew them babies up..LOL
Then we move onto not having the treats on us...so for the reward we have to go over to a location and pick up the treat...Clancy is one to just stare at a treat bag and "will" something to fall out instead of paying attention to me..LOL

We used the flexi for like was mentioned above..I also don't really like them..they are awkward. I use them when I don't want to go out in the rain for potties with them..I can stand in the door way and stay dry..LOL
