To be honest, the conformation classes here really are not that informative. We have conformation drop ins (offered at 2 places), where you show up and gait around other dogs, and have a fake judge go over the dog, but you don't recieve any real instruction.
Granted, it can be a good way to get your dog used to the whole routine, but if you're looking for someone to show you how to handle, you may not find it in the classes :/
I guess it depends on what the classes around you are like though. Perhaps there are some actual informative classes out there. The ones here just aren't that type of class.
I have been lucky that a Puli handler (one who has shown at Westminster even) took the time to help me out. Her breed may not be shelties, but she was quite helpful. I still don't know it all. I think I have a lot to learn about handling, but I'm getting it.
