Mine will bark - Liam moreso than the girls. He is always on alert, always watching. His job is to protect me and he has to warn me of everything - cats, dogs, birds, kids, bikers. His cutoff word is NOW, in a stern voice. One night, I told the dogs now and even had the dogs across the street shut up too.

The girls will bark too - Natalie more than Emma. Emma likes to have the last word.

That being said, you can stop their barking. Just find a word that cuts them off.

Hamish didn't bark a lot, I think because of how he was raised the first three years of his life - long story. Noah would bark at the squirrels and if anyone went to close a window.

I'm considering getting a young Sheltie and had a 'barking' question.
How 'barky' are Shelties on average.

I don't expect them not to bark at all. I own a Collie (Smooth Coat) and have owned Mini Australian Shepherds, so barking at the doorbell, walkers, mailmen, etc, is to be expected (with most any dog). Energy and shedding isn't an issue for me, but I'm concerned about exactly what people mean by 'vocal'.

I know every dog is different, but my brother (who I live with) is not fond of dogs in general, and he finds the vocalizations 'oh boy, you sneezed' 'oh boy, you're near my leash I'd better bark' 'oh boy you're walking toward the back door' 'oh boy, you just woke up' rather irritating, and I'm not excessively fond of them myself. So, is that a common type of vocalization, or is that type of barking an exception to the rule?

Hi, I have two puppies 4 months old. They are completely diferent in this case one of them doesn't bark a lot but the other, the girl, is more vocal than the male, so I'm trainning her to not bark a lot, and they understand quickly, although she barks still much than I wanted. I stop her with "shhh, no!" and if she continues, i catch the nose with my had and say "no!", she is understanding and I hope she learns to be more quiet....

But barking is a natural behaviour for them!

My Sheltieboy was never an excessive barker. The only time that he had a barkfest was when the alarm clock went off. He was so excited about getting breakfast, that he just couldn't contain himself.

By the moment, she barks to everything that moves: cars, people, other dogs....even birds! Is as she could'nt stop doing it!
