Corgi versus Sheltie

Look, you're going to get all votes for Sheltie over here. :wink2:

Here's my (semi-biased, uninformed) impression of Corgis. We have a "treasure" Corgi at our building.

- Corgis are barky and they have a loud bark. Often they bark for no reason. I have heard Shelties can be barky, but ours is not, and she would have approximately 10,000 things a day to bark at if she was.... including the train, trucks, people, people walking outside our door, other dogs, children, etc.

- Corgis are confident but often they are not very friendly dogs. Kind of like terriers in personality... the little jerks of the dog world. They can be nippy toward strangers and other dogs if you are not careful.

- I guess that Corgis might be good watchdogs, but so are Shelties. Both breeds are alert, protective, and smart. However, Corgis bark at strangers and Shelties are just reserved with strangers. I think that a Sheltie is more practical your situation where you have people coming in and out of your house all the time. Shelties will just be reserved with new people but greet ones they know like old friends.

- You will have to socialize and train the dog very carefully, whether Sheltie or Corgi. Socialization is so key with both of these breeds, and they are so smart that if you don't train and socialize them, they will get themselves into trouble. Read Ian Dunbar's book, Before and After Getting Your Puppy, for more on this.

- Corgis often overeat. I see a lot of overweight, unhealthy-looking Corgis around here. It's aggravated by the breed's back problems.... like overweight dachsunds, overweight Corgis are just not going to live as long. :( Probably more the owners than the dogs though.

- Shelties are wonderful dogs.... smart, trainable, eager to please. In your situation, you probably want a Sheltie that is more confident rather than one that is super shy. Make sure you pay attention to the temperament of the puppies and the mother.
