counter surfing...

Ive tried the scat mat with my counter surfing cat...ggrrrrr only works when he knows it there an on other wise he walks around it and finds something else!!!!!!!!!
But yes the only thing that works is keeping the counters clear..and it makes the kitchen look like and orderly too:wink2:

Ember is NOT allowed in the kitchen. She does sneak in when she KNOWS I'm outside to eat the catfood (grrrr). She will take food off the table if it is left there and I go outside. She never takes food if I'm in the house. :( So, I feel your pain. I've tried pennies in a can, catching her in the act, etc., etc. She's not too bad, but I wish she wouldn't do it at all!

Our counters are all up waaaay too high for a sheltie to get to. Even Smudge can't reach.

We are, however, having problems with the trash can. Smudge always sticks his snout in the trash can in my room, and Fluffy has a thing for the kitchen trash. The thing is so scary about the trash can is that Smudge IS tall enough to get inside, and Fluffy's a destructive terror. There are things in the trash can not meant for dogs at all. Chocolate wrappers, onion peelings, ect. Not all the time, but sometimes. Of course we take the trash out at least once a day (usually in the morning) so the trash doesn't get too tall.

I saw on tv where they put two ten pound weights at the bottom of a trash can to keep the dog from knocking it over. That doesn't help with Smudge though. He's so tall he can stick his head all the way down inside the trash can in my room. If he ever decides to help Fluff double team the kitchen trash he can stick his head down halfway into the trash can. Neither of the trash cans have lids.

I had to take the trash cans out of my room completely, and the one in my bathroom had to be replaced with a stainless steel trash can with a lid. I think Bentley has learned how to open it though, so now the bathroom door always stays shut to be safe.

I have tried. And I have tried. And I have tried some more to convince my mom that the raggedy, puke green, 1960s trash can in the kitchen has GOT TO GO. She won't listen. I've begged her to get a new one. I've even offered to buy a new one myself. I'd even let her pick it out!

Some style habbits are just too hard to break, I guess. :biggrin2:

(The one in my room is getting replaced. I just keep fogetting it. I'll be halfway home when I remember that I forgot it. :dead:)

Ha ha - famous last words?! I thought Tully could never reach the table or benchtops, thats why it took me so long to work out she was stealing my breakfast. She goes chair, table, bench - jump, jump, jump. Watch out for these little girls!

Oh I could 100% see Fluffy doing it. Smudge has this thing with furniture, and I don't understand. I WANT him on the furniture, but he won't do it. Fluffy loves being on the furniture.

Did I mention she once ate half a paper plate? :uhoh::rolleyes2: Not shredded it up. Ate it.

I remember you saying back when Trapp first came home, that Smudge won't get on the sofa with you. I don't know why really, but Earnhardt very seldom will get up there either.

One thing I think I know why is,is that for him to sit next to us,or to lie down on sofa,he really has no room to get comfortable. He is not a cuddle type dog.So usually he will be close to us sitting on the floor.
Counter surfing,Earnhardt has become a pro in the last few times he has done it.It amazes me that he can get it and go soo very quickly.

With Apologies to the Beach Boys

chris, that is hilarious! When we moved back to Goshen, my son already had furniture so now we have LOTS of furniture, including 2 dining room tables. We use the spare one for storage and feeding the cats. I went into the kitchen a week or so ago to find Luna ON the table, eating the cat food. I'm pretty sure she just jumped up but haven't seen her do it.

With the counter surfing she is a pro so my kids know to find dinner in the microwave. Everything has to be put away or the dogs consider it fair game.
