We have crated our girl since we got her at 4 months old (she is now 7 months). I wasn't keen on having her in our bedroom at night be we put her crate on the landing area just outside our bedroom. We keep our door open at night so we can listen out for our kids, so she can also hear us. She had a couple of nights being a bit whiny but now she happily goes to bed and we just hear the odd shuffle in the night.
During the days I move the crate to the main living area. If we go out then we put up the puppy play yard with her crate in it plus a water bowl and a few toys. We also leave the radio on so that she at least has a bit of entertainment. I would hate to be in a totally quiet house so assumed that a dog wouldn't be any different.
Normally she just wanders around when we are in the house but due to a few kitchen related issues, I may be using the crate a little more.
Speaking of crate training, how much room are they supposed to have? I know the standard is enough room to stand up, turn around in, lay down, get comfy etc! But I also know that since we are members of this forum, we treat our pets far far above standard, . What do you all do?
I'm not sure who is judging whom here, but I'll just chime in and say that I think Shelties do better crate trained with their humans near by at night. I bought a soft-sided crate that could be moved easily upstairs at night for Bacca. It worked for him because he was not a chewer. If I did have a chewer though, I would have two wire crates.....one for the family area during the daytime, and one in the bedroom for night.
