Cursed Arthritis

At last, Layla the Therapy Sheltie is showing signs of aging. She turns 10 on December 15th. A few days ago, I noticed she seemed to be favoring her right front leg. I gave her a Tramadol and took her to Walter Reed -- she was wonderful, but I could see that she was walking very carefully. the next day, she was clearly in pain. I raced her to the vet; he got me in even though he was totally booked (he knows who's sending his kids to college :lol:).

Layla was diagnosed with arthritis in both elbows and right wrist. This was an inflammatory episode, which will pass with medication (Carpoquin). She'll be able to keep working and doing -- I'll just have to watch for episodes in the future.

I despise this disease. Bitsy Boodle has suffered from arthritis since she was two, and I'd do anything to cure her. I know it's typical (I refuse to say "normal") for arthritis to appear with age, but it's a curse nonetheless.
 
Aw. I know what you're going through. Bailey was just diagnosed with arthritis and started having episodes. It's heartbreak seeing them limp around. :cry:
 
Chris, Pixie has severe arthritis in her front elbows too, and has had it for two years now. After trying all kinds of things including laser therapy (which worked initially but then not so much) we settled on a regimen of Adequan shots which I do at home every few weeks, daily Cosequin DS, and a homeopathic product that used to be called Zeel but is now T-Relief Arthritis. I get it on Amazon and crush one pill in her food morning and evening (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000Y38NJI...d=1449179813&sr=1&keywords=t+relief+arthritis ) and of course her Vibrant Pets Senior.

I have Carprophen for the days she's really stiff but she seems to be maintaining well without it. Her arthritis is so severe that my vet thought she had limited time two years ago but she still bounces around on our walks to the mailbox!

Poor Layla, elbows are the worst.

It's tough having two dogs with arthritis, Shelties might be small but they aren't quite small enough to fit one under each arm when the arthritis plays up.

How do you find she manages with the shiny floors at Walter Reed? Deska sometimes comes with me to Tully's therapy visits (the patients actually love Deska's antics) but when his elbows are sore he really worries about walking on the lino, I assume in case it's slippery.

She does really well -- the halls don't seem to bother her.

Thank you! Bitsy gets weekly Adequan -- and the vet may add it for Layla eventually. Right now, I have a magnetic loop device on her -- we shall see.:fl
