Dandruff??

hanks!! I'll have to check out the pet stores around here and see if they carry it!! Sounds like a good thing to have! Do you feed it to them every day, every week...??

Every day!

Tara I get Fish oil (omega3) and flaxseed at the drugstore...yuu can get it at a health food place as well. I also feed them a food that has it in it already so they are basically getting double doses lol I get the capsules and cut it open and mix with their food. Mine also think they are treats and will just eat them whole. It is like watching therm chew gum because of the capsule. It is hysterical. I feed my dogs twice a day so with each meal they get them. AS far as ordering the stuff online goes...I have had 14 shelties come through my rescue and never bought anything online or supposedly used to maintain a healthy coat. I find a good quality premium food (Halo and Taste of the Wild), the oils and a good brushing and regular maintenance are as good as buying these over priced things that some do

It's not overpriced. The Nupro has Omega3 and garlic, along with several other things that help maintain a good coat. It's not expensive, especially when you only feed 1 teaspoon a day. A 30 ounce container lasts 3-4 months with 5 dogs, being fed daily. It costs about $20 for a 30 ounce container.

Not to mention my dogs love this as a treat...(I mean, if you don't give it to them, they'll bug you until you do!) Also, I can buy this at several of the feed stores in my area. Usually $16 or so for the 30 ounce container.

Ingredients list from their site:

NUPRO's quality ingredients are as follows:

DESICCATED LIVER:The ultimate in palatability! This fresh, natural flavor of real liver is wonderful for the finicky eater because when mixed with water, makes a great gravy that dogs crave. Supplies iron and B vitamins

NORWEGIAN KELP:A natural seaweed that is a rich source of trace minerals including iodine, which is used for proper glandular function and metabolism. An excellent source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, and E. These vitamins are beneficial for maintaining proper health and are responsible for the growth of bones, a healthy heart rate, a sound central nervous system, and helping muscles stay firm and strong. Norwegian kelp grows deep in the ocean, mostly in cold waters, so it contains valuable nutrients from the ocean floor. Aside from nourishing the glands, it is beneficial for overall good health. Supports healthy pigmentation and coat highlights.

MICROPULVERIZED BEE POLLEN:One of nature’s healthiest and most powerful ‘superfoods.’ Bee pollen contains an incredible array of vitamins, minerals, amino acids and enzymes. It’s one of the most nutritionally complete natural substances found on earth. Supports a healthy immune system. Keeps healthy hormones in balance. Supports allergy protection.

IMPORTED YEAST CULTURE:Helps maintain a full and healthy coat which may minimize the occurrence of excessive shedding, hot spots and itchy, dry fur. Provides proteins, zinc and biotin. Best source of B vitamins. Most companies use cheaper brewers yeast which can be a combination of hops, corn, grains, wheat, etc., whatever comes from the brewery. Many animals have grain allergies, and this ingredient may further aggravate an allergy condition. With nutritional yeast culture, it is grown on sugar beets, a veggie source, so NO grains are present at all. Something to think about when reading ingredient labels.

FLAXSEED AND GROUND BORAGE SEED:Provides essential fatty acids. Most absorbable vegetable fatty acid for the canine. Rich in omega 3 fatty acids, alpha-linolenic acid, fiber and lignans. Helps maintain healthy shiny fur and soft skin.

LECITHIN: A rich source of choline, which the body requires to make acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter which is essential for normal, healthy nerve and brain function. Supports healthy liver function, too.

GARLIC CONCENTRATE:Wonderful ingredient that does so much for the body. Garlic contains allicin, a broad-spectrum antimicrobial capable of warding off different types of infection. Supports a healthy immune system.

LACTOBACILLUS ACIDOPHILUS:Promotes healthy digestion which may reduce the occurrence of flatulence. Because NUPRO is in a powdered form and not from concentrate, it is easily assimilated into the system and digested with the dog’s food. There is no sense in giving an animal this superior product if they don’t digest it properly. Also promotes friendly bacteria in intestinal tract.

CALCIUM CITRATE: Calcium is best absorbed in an acidic environment, hence calcium citrate is the best absorbed supplemental form of calcium---it does not require extra stomach acid for absorption. Intended to provide nutritive support for healthy bones, teeth and nerve function.

Opinions

Everyone has different opinions...... I don't think anything was directed at anyone in particular. Let's remain open minded please....... I like it when we all get along;)

My vet recommends safflower oil on their food for flaky skin. We used to put it on our cats food and she loved it, thought that it was a real treat.

You can get it at most grocery stores and its cheap compared to any supplements, if you're watching your money. You obviously get a lot of other benefits from supplements though!

I just read too far into her post...so I've edited it to remove it...(way too stressed...I've got to keep repeating "not everyones out to get me" lol)

I order it from my local feed store. I've been feeding it to my puppy since he was 12 weeks old. (All of my dogs just love it-and it's healthy and good for them!)

And the joint supplement (not to be fed to a puppy) works wonders for dogs. I had an arthritic male (he'd hurt his shoulder when he was younger, and limped on it after that, constantly), who stopped limping completely after being on that for 2 months.

Narmowen, if Sadie has to stay on this vet food that I don't like maybe I'll consider that nupro supplement. I wonder if its available in canada...my guess is no ...

I too apologize if it seemed I was saying anything derrogatory about your suggestion. I truly am sorry as I never meant it that way at all. I was just trying to offer an alternative for Tara, and one she could get right away. You remember how anxious about my Yelly and his coat and nasty skin...I wanted instant help lol and you did help me with your suggestions on that (btw, I did order that brush just awaiting for it to arrive)

It might be. I learned about it from a breeder, so I'm not sure. It's something to look into, though!

Look into other foods, though-like sheltiemom suggested. Foods given by vets (unless it's the extremely hard to find diet food) aren't always the best...

I love that brush! I just lost it to my grandmother for my aunt's dogs! :D

I think that the food change would be the best idea...along with other supplements.

Also, brewers yeast pills (with or without garlic) really help to improve coat/skin conditions...

ETA: Nupro is available in Canada.

My vet rarely suggests the "special diets" that many companies say are the end all to be all. After seeing the remarked improvements in my dogs health and coats he recommends it more often now

My current vet doesn't (he loves the Diamond Naturals that I feed now, for what it's done for our shelties), but past vets have tried that stuff (I mean, trying to get us to switch to special foods).

ooops I should have said he recommends the foods I feed my dogs now. more often then the special foods recommended for certain things. I have a dog with chronic pancreatitis, another with allergies, another a few other things like kidney failure
