Darla's broken leg

So sorry you are having such a time of it. How long a leash do you have her on? Can you lengthen it a bit to give her the illusion that she is free of it?

I've given up on the leash, I didn't want to stress her out too much. I'm just blocking her into a small area now and she's going to the toilet. The vet said I shouldn't worry too much about her circling.

My poor rat was put to sleep yesterday. My partner and I were crying so much whilst getting her ready to go to the vet, which caused Darla to start crying. We came home to find Darla had started ripping her cast and had caused her stitches to become very red and sore. We were both emotionally drained after putting our poor rattie to sleep but we had to go straight back to the vet and sort out the cast. We didn't get home until 9 pm  what a horrible day!

We are off back to the vet in an hour to have a proper check. She had to wear the cone of shame last night and she looked so upset. I'm sitting with her all day so she doesn't have to wear it most of the day. It's gonna be a VERY long 4 weeks now, but I just don't want her getting depressed from wearing it all the time.

I am so sorry for your Pet Rats loss. I know I love my animals so much the pain is searing when they leave us. Darla I am sure with the stress of yesterday is what caused her to chew on her leg. I bet the cone comes off rather quick and she becomes use to the cast. Your in my prayers tonight, big hugs to you and Darla. Do you have any bachs rescue remedy, it might help keep her stress level down, or any kava kava, I like the rescue better myself.

Thanks Internette :smile2:

We do have some bachs rescue remedy, didn't know we could use it on Darla. How much can I give?

We are watching tv together and so she doesn't need the cone on when I'm watching her. She's being so good.

my rescue cat does well on it when we travel and when we moved. I used it on him the first year quite a bit. I have a small bowl with one cup of water and add 5 drops for him. I think I added 10 when we moved he was so nervous. I once gave to my female on her tongue but was too much when her leg broke and she was loopy drunk like so I give in water only now, she is very petite and weighs 6 pounds fully grown so she is hard to give medicine to, my male is nicknamed chubbsy he isnt fat but he is heavy in weight and rather muscular.

So sorry for your loss. We have our beloved companions such a short time. She'll always be in your heart.

My Border Collie, Max had a very serious degloving injury to his left leg when he was 6 months old. I had a terrible time keeping him on crate rest. (A little like keeping a tornado in a cardboard box.) He kept tearing off his bandages and figured out the collar of shame within 15 minutes. That was when he earned the nickname "Houdini Dog". He was so bored with being crated that he not only learned to open his own crate, but Neechee's and our foster dog's as well. (Being bad is no fun unless you have partners, I guess.)

Don't stress too much about the circling. As long as it's not violent activity (i.e. running, jumping, etc.) she should be just fine.

I had a spinal injury in 2003, and had 2 rods and 6 screws put in in 2005. Less than six months later, three of the screws were broken, and one rod was bent. My ortho never could figure out how it happened, but had to go in from the front and put in a plate to shore up the collapsed vertebra. You do have to be VERY careful with ortho implants. It can take the bones up to a year to knit properly so as not to put too much stress on the implants. Supplements should help her heal quickly.

Rescue Remedy is ideal for a stressed dog. So is melatonin.

Ouch, poor you Jaynie! That must have been awful:no:

Darla has been happily taking the rescue remedy and I'm trying to teach her a new trick everyday to keep her mind occupied. Plus the cheese rewards will help her leg to mend. She has almost grasped 'hide' today, hiding her face behind her front paw. Too cute!

She's only wearing the cone of shame at night when I can't watch her, so she's tolerating me putting it on her very well. I always give her a treat when I put it on so she doesn't mind too much.

I will keep you all posted on how we get on. We have done 1 week now, 3 more to go!

Thank you all, Darla sends big licks and sheltie smiles :smile2:

I been thinking about Darla, good to hear things are improving. I pray she heals so well she will never remember it all.
