Deja gets schooled

How fun! It's great to see them work to learn and then 'get it'. Of course, Deja is the star of her class. She's a Sheltie!

We did a similar exercise at agility a couple of weeks ago. We were working on having our dogs work away from us with the Go command. Phebe had a great time flying over the four jumps.

I want to try flyball soon.

Dont shelties look fantastic racing down the four jumps. You will have to take a camera - my favourite shot of Deska is him flying over the flyball jumps.

Yeah definately! I want a video of it, then do it in slow motion with the song 'March of the Valkarie' playing!

How are you managing juggling 2 dogs in the one class?

I use the hands free DW. hehe.. Dawn works Darby. I work Deja.

I use a hands free belt clip (called and ezi-walker) and clip on 2 shortish leads so I can keep one tethered to me while I hold onto the other. And it means I can clip their harnesses quickly once I catch them.

That sounds like an ideal setup. Do you have links or a pic of one?

And you have to get a flyball harness - they are so cool, and it means its easier to catch a small dog with the handle, otherwise being a small herding dog Deja might just decide to run past you and round up the other dogs (thats what Tully does).

We bought a simple harness from Walmart for Darby because he is so wiggly and people can't hang on to him. He now has a handle hehe.. So far, Deja just goes to whomever I tell her to and stands waiting for the commands. I don't think Deja is that excited about it yet. rofl

So far, the thing I'm noticing about flyball is how much the handlers get to work together. It's sa relay race for the dogs but they dont really inteact at all, and aren't supposed to. The handlers work the dogs, coordinate when to release, where to run etc. etc.

It really is a fun sport! There's a lot going on and everyone enjoys themself!

Yesterday's class went very well. Two of our class mates dropped out so it is just three of us now. We started class by working on recall. It was cool because I was standing next to some of the flyball club members when our JRT (Darby) did his run. They were like.. 'Dude, did you see that? that height dog just single touched that third jump!'.
And then DW ran him a second time and both the team members were like. 'Hang on! he just single touched three of the jumps!!' And then they went and grabbed the team captain and were all excited.. i walked over and had to ask.. 'Guys what's a single touch jump?

Ok, so from what I understand, if a dog is able to jump a jump, land and then launch themselves over the next jump without having to take a step, it's called a single touch and is what the fastest flyball dogs do. Height dogs are the smallest flyball dogs and they never single touch.. Darby did. He was amazing..

So next up was Deja and everyone was still talking about Darby and how good he did.. and uhm.. did I mention that Deja is a height dog as well? At 15.5 inches, she drops the jumps to 12 inches which is what the team is used to running.. Oh .. and.. She's faster than Darby

Hehe.. Ok, so she isn't QUITE as motivated as him but she did do a single touch a couple times and she looks SOO cool when she is running.. hehe Once she gets the game down she is going to be so fast..

Very cool about Darby's single touch, and Deja's, too! I'm glad you explained what the term means. I was thinking they touched the top of the hurdle, but that didn't seem like a good thing.

It sounds like you had fun even with an "Intact" dog being their. I'd have given him a dirty look and said "you need to keep him away from her, SHE's a show dog" But then again I'm vindictive

It does look great when they have a rythmn to their jumping, Tully can do a couple of jumps in a run but three would be pushing it. Are you able to get a video or photos of training - I would love to see the set up there.

Great that you are getting focused training - more time to practice on the box! Here the beginners intake is usually 15-20 dogs, but for both mine only 2 of their classmates lasted. It makes it hard to get a spot in comp teams and there isnt enough yet for a new team. Tully only got a place because a height dog died, Deska only gets to run when someone on the other team drops out, altho next weekend I have pulled Tully out so Deska can run so he can get a flyball title before his birthday that week.

The humans have gotten better. It's funny. The one that was the worst is turning out to be very nice. Her big boy is a show dog as well and he has lived a sheltered life. I think this is the only interaction with other that he gets.
