Dental drama

Glad the appointment went well Sharon, there’s not much about the vet that is cheap! Bloodwork and urinalysis will set you back here about $300 alone!
I have a dentist appointment on Monday and need to get a tooth pulled…I’m curious to see how much it will cost. We have a dental plan run by the government I qualify for so we’ll see how much I will have to pay.
Every year when I do my taxes I think we should be able to claim the expenses we pay for veterinary care on our pets…they’re part of our family. A progressive government would allow this. Maybe one day…as the saying goes ‘if wishes were horses beggars would ride’:yes:
 
Yikes, what a situation! Aside from the incisor, is he going to lose any more teeth?

Dental work of any kind for dogs is always so expensive. My Bryan goes in for his dental cleaning on March 10th, so that combined with the pre-exam tests will easily run a good $700. I'm hoping they don't find any issues or have to pull a tooth or anything surprising. From what i can see in his mouth he's pretty good. He was born without two molars so he has premolars, a gap, and then the two far back molars (like his papa). We should get a discount! LOL
 
Crapola. Not at all what was expected. He lost 7 teeth, luckily just small premolars and those lower incisors, but she discovered extensive periodontal disease and some bone loss. It's all on the inside of his teeth, where we can't brush, especially the bottom where the tongue is. My vet said his genetics won this fight. I have not had a Sheltie yet who has kept all their teeth and we are really good about brushing.
The bill was quite a shock too. These corporate vet hospitals are just charging a mint. But I love my vet, she goes above and beyond always and is just really a great clinician and surgeon.

She did a block on his whole mouth so he's not feeling any pain, he ate some canned food for dinner, and is following us all over to make sure we don't leave him again. Poor guy. Canned food again tomorrow and then she said we can just soak his kibble. Hopefully he'll eat it like that. Arrrgggghhhh.
 
I'm glad Eli did well but sorry for the diagnosis and your bill! I can relate. I don't think I've had a Sheltie yet who hasn't lost most of their teeth by 10. At the moment, Misty is the only one with a full mouth here but she's only 5. And I take care of their teeth too....it seems like a losing game or as your vet said, genetics. Thankfully, they all manage to eat and chew just fine. Hope Eli is feeling better today!
 
He had a decent night, is on carprofen and gabapentin. Kind of low energy and seems a bit pathetic and clingy, but aftermath of anesthesia often does that. At least he ate, pottied normally and wolfed his pills down wrapped in cheese. She wants to have him in again for a cleaning in 9 months. Said a lot of his teeth are borderline and obviously we'll do what we can to keep them in his head!

Meadow is now 6 and her teeth are great, but I'm wondering if she should have a dental cleaning just to prevent this. The Xrays of course are helpful for seeing loss of bone. But the cost, jeez louise. :eek2:
