Dermyosititis

My precious Sheltie mix was diagnosed with Dermyosititis. It started when she was about 3 months. I had no idea what could be wrong but with 3 wrong diagnosis I finally had the biopsy done. This was 6 months ago and we put her on the generic form of trentenal and it’s not working. my baby, Ramona, is miserable. She has hair loss all over but especially ears, face, feet and tail. It’s crusty and gooey. She’s only a year old and acts like she’s old. She has stopped playing and is constantly scratching. I have her on good food, vit e, fish oil, plus the meds. Prednisone did help but as soon as she went off it came right back. I’ve done all the research online, but feel I’m doing everything I can. Anyone have a pup with this? Anything would help. I’m afraid I’m going to loose her.

No help, sorry for Ramona. From looking it up it's something hereditary. Not sure they could help, but maybe a call to Nature's Farmacy for suggestions on supplements that may help. They make some good products and may have some suggestions on things that may provide her relief. https://naturesfarmacy.com/

I'm so sorry to read this, Heather! Your poor puppy. It is a terrible disease. I don't have any experience to offer, but I would recommend taking her to a canine dermatologist if you haven't yet. They sometimes have treatments that regular vets aren't aware of. Sending good thoughts for your girl, and please keep us posted.

I second Sandy's suggestion here. The people at Natures Farmacy were extremely helpful to me dealing with one of my girl's allergies, even though they weren't food related. I spoke with a woman named Star Weaver who has kept in touch with me since. You can email her here and tell her you found her though Ann at Sheltie Forum.

I haven't experienced myself, but I do know someone with a Collie (Rough) who had it. The parents took the dog in because it belonged to their son and he wasn't taking good care of the disease and the dog looked awful. I know the dog needed to largely stay out of the sun, and the fur kept well managed and undercoat brushed out. Whenever the dog had a flare it did need to go back onto Pred and I believe it was on other supplements. And they home cooked for him.

But you know that dog only died a few months ago at the age of 13 years (which is old for a Collie), which surprised us all. Obviously the severity makes a difference.

MY HEART GOES OUT TO YOU...THIS COULD BE A LONG ROAD BUT WILL CLEAR UP IF YOU STICK TOT HE MEDICATION
WE INHERITED SASHA OUR FIRST SHELTIE FROM AN ELDERLY NEIGHBOR WHEN SHE WAS 6 MONTHS OLD...SHE DEVELOPED DERMATOMYOSITIS AT 7 YEARS ...IT WAS SO UNUSUAL FOR HER TO DEVELOP THE DISEASE SO LATE IN ADULTHOOD...OUR VET HAD NO EXPERIENCE WITH THE DISEASE SO I RESEARCHED THE INTERNET AND FOUND AN EXTENSIVE STUDY BEING DONE AT TEXAS A&M..THEY INCLUDED HER IN THEIR STUDY AND GAVE ME VALUABLE ADVISE ON HER TREATMENT AND DRUGS REQUIRED. THE DISEASE CLEARED UP EVENTUALLY BUT IT DID TAKE QUITE A LONG TIME FOR THE TRENTAL TO WORK..WE ALSO USED VITAMIN B CAPSULES THAT WE OPENED AND APPLIED DAILY.DON'T BE DISCOURAGED...IT WILL CLEAR UP!
WILL KEEP YOU AND RAMONA IN OUR PRAYERS.
