diarrhea/probiotics

Hello All...My 4 year old blue merle has infrequent bouts of diarrhea and would like some advice on proven remedies and/or what to add to his regular diet to possibly avoid these episodes all together.
Thanx

One of my dogs also has recurring diarrhea bouts and after trial and error, I've discovered a few things that really help. First, feed a good quality probiotic every day...not just when the dog is sick. I use Probio Max by Natures Farmacy. https://naturesfarmacy.com/dogzymes-probiotic-max.html

If the runs are serious, be sure your vet has checked to be sure your dog doesn't have worms or another medical condition. My girl just seems prone to occasional runs so I've found these things help. I've also switched her food to Merrick Limited Ingredient Turkey and Sweet Potato formula which made a big difference.

Next, add some pure canned pumpkin (not the pumpkin pie mix) to your dog's food to add some fiber. I give it every day, but it's an effective remedy for both constipation and diarrhea if you want to use it just when your pup gets the runs.

Finally, if that doesn't do the trick, I give ProPectalin, also available from Amazon. This is the powder, but it also comes in a paste and pills. I use the pills. I found it will stop the runs almost immediately and I've only needed to give a second dose once. I like that it's not a strong drug like flagl which the vets commonly use for diarrhea and it doesn't have side effects. It's my go-to remedy when nothing else works.

Hope this helps.

It's worth writing down everything he's been into when he has a bout of diarrhea. I did this with my male who often got diarrhea and it was an eye opener. I discovered he gets the runs with turkey and chicken (no great surprise) and when he eats dirt! So nowadays I avoid products with poultry, and more importantly, as soon as I see his mouth heading for the dirt he gets stopped. He hardly ever gets the runs now (just when he's eaten crap off the ground before I can stop him)

I cook one meal for my dogs, but with the other, like Ann I have them on a limited ingredient food (Wellness). For a dog with sporadic tummy issues I think it helps and will give you a better idea of what is causing the problem.

My 4 year old Honey has pretty much always had what I can only describe as an irritable bowel. We have never been able to get concrete answers on what it is or why it happens, but since putting her on Wellness limited ingredients food last year her bouts of diarrhoea occur much less frequently.

limited ingredient food (Wellness) has 12% fat so I could not use on Laddie who has pancreas. Otherwise I would try it as he has lose stools from time to time! I have to keep him fat content under 10.

I do use the probiotics listed above!

Ann- do you know how many 1/4 tps there are in the 1 pound container?

I don't offhand, unless it says in the description on the website. Or you could call them and they could probably tell you. I will say that I give it to all six of mine every day and a one-pound container lasts me a long time, maybe 6 to 8 months.
