I have a question (ok a few ?'s:wink2: ) about DE as I was reading up on it and thinking of using it for flea control this fall as flea season is almost upon us...

Does it change the Ph of the soil?

Do you have to re-apply every time it rains or you water?

How do you put it down with a drop spreader? Does it spread like lime?

The only one I can answer is yes, you will need to reapply after it rains.
I actually use it as a daily wormer... 1tsp daily and I never have to worry about worms as it is always used. I do this because of the sheer amount of dog shows I do and the number of other dogs mine are exposed to.
 
Hope is right, you do need to reapply after it rains, which is a pain if you're covering a large area. I found with a spreader that it clumps, so not ideal for dispensing that way. I put it in a container with holes and walked around my pen and sprinkled. But it's labor intensive. Now I spot treat with it but that's all I have time for.

I've had the best results with the apple cider vinegar/water mixture and spraying them once a day lightly. So far, so good. The acid test will be tick season in the fall.
 
We had luck spreading it with our spreader, but every now and then I have to shake it. You do have to apply after rain and I don't think it changes the ph.
 
I'm going to tag onto this thread since it's DE related, but not really dog related.

Does anyone know if DE is safe for cats? A kitten basically ended up on my patio, which has DE all over it. I wanted to be sure the kitten would be okay. I'm not sure how old she was, she was about the size of an 8 week old Sheltie.

yes DE is safe for cats, I have treated mine with it.

I spread mine around with an old coffee tin with holes drilled in it

Instead of ordering it, if you have a farm supply store they should carry DE. Its usually in the cattle section.

Thanks. I just wanted to be sure that the kitten that wandered onto my DE laden patio was safe. Now she's more safe from fleas, lol.
