Different Size categories?

Sandy, I have a lot of poodle x in my classes nowadays - during Covid so many people wanted puppies and the good breeders wouldn't over breed just to keep up with a temporary spike in demand but the 'factories' were more than willing to fill the gap. I have to say they are one of the dumbest breeds. Sweet natured, but slow learning, short attention span and well, dumb. Many are under the mistaken belief that as the Poodle is supposed to be the smartest breed then their dogs should be smart. Maybe it's the combining of the genes that dumbs them down, or just the types of poodles they are crossing (miniature poodles are not that bright).

I agree with Chris, small size creates many internal issues - I was just watching a documentary that discussed research showing both increasing the size of the dogs (giant breeds) and shrinking dogs is creating a lot of genetic issues. Even in our own breed research has shown small Shelties are much more prone to teeth problems (esp lance canines).

I've always heard they are very smart dogs, one has to be very careful to pick a good poodle breeder though, one of the most over bred dog breeds
Yes, absolutely! Nowadays you have to be very careful selecting a purebred even ones listed with the CKC (not sure about AKC). Perhaps with the pandemic people got lazy and let standards fall but some breeders are not up to par on the CKC site. Poodles would never be a breed for me...people think Shelties are high maintenance ...
