Different Ways to Teach Weaves

definitely taught the wrong way, Stacey... 2x2 does NOT reward with treats in the pole and never slows the dog down if it is done right...
I love your dogs weaves and Sting/Shadow's weaves, obviously!!! So I doubt newbies like myself could critique anything, but I have to say your experience is not typical of what I know of the2X2 method. People DO go too fast and close the poles, at leat this is what I found most of us starting out with me ended up doing wrong in the beginning and we ended up starting over again, lol. This is what is brilliant about the method, you're able to back chain without it being frustrating ... Susan Garrett did a brilliant job developing this method... I doubt I would ever try and learn another method, with my next dog :D

My instructor Adina, whom Toffee and I adore made this video for us beginners when we couldn't wrap our head around the concept... She is doing this with her Borzoi pup and I reallllly love her dog, who is appropriately named Love, but Toffee hates her and calls her General Grievous :D

12 years ago when I first started agility, we used weave-o-matics(stick in the ground poles tilted) and just plain old ordinary luring through the poles, but the techniques that are out today weren't out back then.

With Trax we started with channel weaves and then as they got closer together then we tilted the poles out into the weave-o-matic style. It worked great for Trax and he has awesome fast weaves now. BUT he does have issues sometimes with soft-sided entries. So we're doing some entry reinforcing by using some stick in the ground poles and the 2x2 method.

It's amazing how things change over time!

Here's something interesting and funny and why I was so confused in class half the time. lol.

Koji learned on the channel weaves. He did awesome!!! He did slow down when they were almost upright, but that's to be expected. It was hard to teach sometimes because he wasn't toy motivated so I'd have to leave food on the ground and get to it before he did (if he popped out). No Manners Minders. lol. But, with some private training, he got it and boy, he got fast! Well, fast in my eyes, not so fast in others.

After we had been trialing awhile and even had 12 poles down pat, um, we started working on 2x2. I have no idea why, but that's what we did.

To this day, Koji has awesome weaves. The only issue I have, and this is totally my fault, is his entries aren't so hot and the weaves are definitely not independent. Since I don't have equipment, it's really hard to teach those things.

BUT, a friend lent me her weaves so I can do more 2x2 and independent training now. Like I said, I'm going back to redo a lot of things. Slowly I am gaining distance from the weaves and Koji and he finishes. I think using the MM will help him drive to the end w/o me. Right now, if I RC him and don't come up beside him fast enough, he pulls out because he's looking for me. Ugh!

I agree with others, I think different things work for different dogs. All 3 methods seem tried and true. So no one is better than another.
