Do shelties have different coat textures?

Missy's coat isn't super thick, but it's not terribly thin either. It's really just perfect. Easy to manage and not too heavy. Her coat isn't straight but I wouldn't call it wavy either. It kinda looks like she always has "bed head". I've attached a pic that kinda shows it. I was trying to get her to stack for that other thread.. kinda failed. She wanted that cheese a little too bad.

Pepper's coat went through a wavy stage when she was about 6-12 months old. Her coat still has a very slight wave to it, but nothing like when she was younger.

Wow so many variances! i had no idea. Im so excited to see how his coat develops! at the moment the fur behind his ears is super crinkled like an 80's back up singer haha! super soft and silky to touch. His pants on the other hand are very dense and soft but not silky. They matt very easily already. His chest ruff is coming in full force at the moment and it the softest, whitest cuddliest thing in the world. I wish i could have cushions like that! he's starting to look very majestic and not so awkward anymore.

I had two sables that were related and their coats were the same so I just assumed that's what a Sheltie coat was like. Koji, the sable, is tall and his coat doesn't seem to collect stuff. His pants are more coarse, but his body hair is soft. Then I got a tri and wow, her coat is sooooo different. Poor Vogue, her hair seems to love to collect stuff (or maybe because she's smaller and closer to the ground, I have no clue). I always have to brush out her coarser hair near her belly and her pants because it tends to tangle. And her body fur seems softer than Koji's. I had no clue their coats would be so different. She also seems to get dirtier faster, like her hair is oilier and feels grittier faster than Koji's. I can wash Koji twice a year and he's fine. Vogue definitely needs more baths. Again, no clue if it's because she's 14" tall and Koji is pushing 18" (so except for this pants and the fringe on his legs, nothing really touches the ground).

BTW, Koji's hair behind his ears did the crimped thing too when he was young. I even had people ask me why I crimp it. haha. But he grew out of it and it's just fine and straight now. However, when it's wet, it goes back to crimped.

Phoebe is a couple of months older than Gordon. Right now her belly hair and the hair on the top of her back by her shoulders is coarse and is also the longest. The rest is slightly wavy and very soft. i don't know if the coarse hair is indicative of what is to come or if she will just be mixed. I read somewhere that hair grows anywhere for 1/4 to 1/2 inch a month, so we will see.

Thats what Gordon looks like ( not as long) but that messy bedhead hair. No matter how many times i try and brush it it always looks messy!

Oh my there are LOTS of variations in coats. We are on our 8th Sheltie now and some have the nice smooth coat you expect. Some are what a groomer called "Cotton Coat" and it feels just like cotton. Is puffier than the regular coat. We had one that had wavy hair all over. Our cryptic blue has hair that is a little coarser. And our friend has a merle that has very straight, very coarse hair.

Maddie's coat is soft and almost silky everywhere except her tail and pants - those pants are boar-bristle coarse!! o_O
