Does repetition mean wrong?

Do you think a dog can confuse repeating an exercise as a correction to the first execution of the same exercise?

I mean, he get a front crooked and we repeat it. A sloppy signal, and yup...usually repeated.

Tonight, the first scent article, brilliant! Second scent article, problem.
Hmmmm, could he think that by being asked to find it the second time that it was because the first time wasn't right?

Interesting! I sometimes wonder this in while training agility. First thing that comes to my mind: Did he get sufficiently rewarded after the first scent article?

(Emphasis on sufficiently because I would think this is relative to what the dog think is sufficient, maybe there was a reward but he is trying to see if he can get a better one by offering a different behavior )

Hum I don't know that I have ever had that problem even with the dogs ie Ember and Jazz that hated repetition. But then I use NRM in practice so it clear that the exercise or part was wrong. ie crooked front, opps try again and dog positions themselves in front and then a verbal yes on the right behavior.

I usually get a better effort the next time because they are thinking about it.

I guess the question is what kind of feedback verbal, body language are you giving your dogs that would say your right or you're wrong. Remember you don't need to say anything to your dog for them to pick up on that you're unhappy. One time during heeling, I stopped, dropped my hands and took a deep breath with Ember and she reacted like a hit her with a 2 by 2. She is the dog that does signals with eyes movements and recalls and retrieves with just me taking a breath to speak. Don't underestimate what your dog is reading.

I did praise and reward after the first article and promptly set up for the 2nd. Since he's just learning, we are not far from the pile, and the pile consists of only three or four articles.

I think what I will try today is separating the two articles with a couple pivots or fronts... And gradually reduce the time between the first article and second.

Alternately, to keep him from simply retrieving, we use "find it" in a dark room. Might be a treat, an article, a scented toy.... Throwing a treat in the tall grass works too....

I would say you just have a green baby dog that does not have the behavior down yet.

Diva is showing me what real dogs are like to train articles. I was spoiled with mister 2 weeks and miss 1 week to learn. What you mean most dogs don't learn that fast?

LOL, some shelties make this way too easy! Others bring us back to reality... :). We are going to work more on find it's till I hear his nose turn on, then I'll bring the articles back out.
