dog license for fosters

I have never bothered with this before except when we had a permanent foster, but after receiving this years notice to renew the licenses for my boys I decided to call the county and ask if I need to get a license for my fosters. I told her I don't know if they'll be here a week, a month, etc. She said she never had anyone ask so she checked with someone and came back and said all dogs over three months must have a license. I still don't intend to get a license for them unless they'll be here long term. The rescue I foster for is in another state so that complicates matters even more. I might check with the SPCA and see if they are required to license their dogs. So how do the rest of you handle this?
 
Same here - I looked into it as I like to be legal, but we're rural and there's no animal shelter or by law enforcement for dogs either; funny thing is that the town 5 minutes north is a different municiplality and they have licensing.

I would think it's not an issue unless your rescue escapes or someone complains ( you aren't technically the owner).
 
no license here either. but in PA you do need them. I'd check with your rescue because I'm sure they've had people in your state rescue before. They should know.
 
I don't know if our town's rule is the same for all NY state, but our town requires any dog that is over 3 months old and living within the town for over one month to be licensed. I think this is their way of making sure that all dogs in the town (short or long term) are UTD on rabies which has become an issue in our area with a significant percent of the local fox population being infected.
