Dog Obedience Trainng.

Laddie's Mom

Forums Enthusiast
Well, I have been emailing this one dog training club that is about 2 hours from me, they finally have decided that it is ok for me and Laddie to come, in fact, the owner said she was impressed at how much time I was willing to take to have him trained, etc. Well, it will be worth it, I am getting no where fast.

Here is the letter they wrote me last night, I love their programs, I am going to do all three, start at the easiest one first and work up, so, my first class will be in October, which is our summer.

Hi Susan

Wow, I am very impressed by the distance you are willing to travel :)

Therefore, I want to get you sorted into the right class for you from the start. I have few options for you, which you are probably already aware of. It sounds as though any of them would be a good fit for you.

DOMESTIC OBEDIENCE
Our next domestic course starts Tuesday 15 October and runs for 7 weeks, starting with 1 classroom night and 6 practical sessions. Classes are held in Foster dog park, Tennyson st, Rolleston on Tuesdays at 630pm lasting 45minutes each. We cover the basics of good dog ownership (sit, down, stay, leash walking) and help with a few standard problems (jumping, barking etc).
ADVANCED DOMESTIC
This class runs continuously (also at 6.30pm on Tuesdays) and offers an introduction to competitive obedience, RallyO, Agility and Canine Good Citizen as well as some trick training. It is a step up from domestic and asks for more attention from the dogs.
COMPETITIVE OBEDIENCE, BEGINNERS
This class runs continuously (also at 6.30pm on Tuesdays). It is an introductory course for handlers new to obedience who want to compete in the future. All training is positive and rewards based, with play and games.
Please let me know what you would be interested in.

Kindest regards

Does this sound like a good program to you folks?

Sounds like a good course. Very similar to the courses we offer - right down to the introductory night without dogs. And it's great they offer a feel for other dog activities in the second level. She also states positive, reward based training which is a must.

At least it will be daylight savings by then (if yours starts at the same time as ours).

Susie....that sounds a lot like what I have put my Shelties through. Class with dog was 6 weeks...lots of work on heeling, sit, down, stay, coming when called, etc. at then end of the course the CGC was given. The instructor really emphasized short training sessions....no longer than 10-15 minutes at a time.
It looks as if you have found what you are looking for as far as training. Too bad you have to drive so far to attend the classes.

it looks great! I just hope the timing works well in your schedule. I currently drive an hour and half twice a week for training (2 differ dogs) and sadly, I slack on training my older one because come Thursday at 7:30pm I'd rather be anywhere but training my dog especially because I don't get home til almost 10pm. :sleepy: That being said, the other class I'm in is Mondays at 6:30pm. I LOVE this. Makes Mondays a lot more fun and I get home about 8:30pm

Yeah, the distance sort of worries me, but being that is the start of our summer, it will be light when class is over, it goes from 6:30pm to 7:30, so, not too bad, every Tuesday. The drive home is on a two lane road, very secluded, but, LOL, almost all roads in New Zealand are secluded, we will just have to see.
