After 3 weeks with us, Duncan has settled in nicely to his new home. He routinely sleeps 7 hours every night... 8 hours a couple of times. Who can complain about that? He goes down at 10:30 every night, and gets up with me at 5:30 every weekday. Since I have to get up at 5:30 to get my granddaughter ready for school, this works out well. Hopefully, he'll start to sleep a little later by summer.
We already have Duncan signed up for puppy classes starting June 1st. To quote from the school's web site...
Columbus All-Breed Training Club (CATC), established in 1953, is an AKC licensed, nonprofit dog training club located on the southeast side of Columbus, Ohio.
Let us train you to teach your dog. We offer puppy kindergarten, beginning obedience, and confirmation classes to the general public, as well as, advanced agility, obedience, and specialty classes to our members. Both pure-bred and mixed breed dogs are welcome to attend classes.
In addition, we hold many sanctioned and "for fun" competitions in agility, conformation and obedience as well as Canine Good Citizen certification.
This group is very well recommended and we're really looking forward to his classes.
Duncan has gone two weeks without an accident in the house. We're comfortable that he knows what to do and where, but understand that he's 'way too young to hold it if we miss his cue. Constant vigilance! Duncan has also learned to climb the steps into our house- both the small steps at the front door and the much larger steps on our back deck. He's still hesitant about going down, but not for long, I think.
Duncan will chase a tennis ball, get it in his mouth (somehow), then take it wherever he feels like. He also likes to 'ride' or herd a soccer ball around the yard... except when I'm trying to take a picture of him. I'll get one eventually, never fear. He also likes to run in circles around my wife and me, very fast, frequently plopping to his stomach and staring at us. Pretty soon, I'm sure he'll be able to herd us wherever he wants
Although he took to the collar very easily, he's not crazy about the leash. He follows us very well, but like any other A.D.D. child, he's easy to distract with the right stimulus. He's very curious about new things, and shows very little fear. He doesn't like the barking of some large dogs in our neighborhood, and comes to sit on our feet whenever this happens. Likewise, when large jets go overhead on their way to a nearby airport, he's on our feet. I haven't got him to look up at the jets yet, so he can't figure out where the noise comes from. He saw his first horse and carriage today and was very curious about them... not in any hurry to leave my side, though. He also experienced his first people crowds today and handled them well. He likes being petted by anyone, but he wants to stay right with us while others are around, sniffing busily.
All in all, Duncan's a joy to have around. I'll try to get more and better pictures together, and I'll keep posting updates here. Hope you enjoy them.
