Ear Matts

Hmm..my boy has only ever had one behind his ear and that was because I was a wicked slacker that month. Otherwise, he just doesn't seem to mat that easily. My girl I need to use thinning shears behind the ears to prevent them and I do use a spray detangler with a fine toothed slicker once each week. Thinning out with wide angle shears really works well to prevent them in the first place and still leaves the dog looking natural without any cut lines or scissor marks.

Thanks so much for the suggestions everyone! She's going in for a bath tomorrow and I plan to pick up some baby powder and a fine tooth comb! She's still a bit tough to brush, or comb. She gets so excited!

Dickens's fur doesn't mat at all, for some reason. It could be because I give him half-a-teaspoon of bacon fat per day. It's hard to tell on him, but I used to do this with an Irish Setter, and that dog's coat always looked as if it had been freshly oiled. Years ago a vet suggested this to me for a dog that had a particularly bad skin condition. It didn't help his skin condition (which was really severe), but the effect on the coat was noticeable.

Of course brushing is still necessary, but I can get away with brushing Dickens on the order of once or twice per week.
