Ears -- Augh!

I'd love some advice about how to groom prick ears. I'm never going to show Layla, but I'd like her ears to look tidy. How long should the fur on the back of her ears be? And advice would be appreciated.

What in particular are the problems you are having? :confused2:

I have discovered that a small amount of baby powder worked into the hair behind their ears helps reduce tangles and mats.

I use a small, sharp scissors to clip unwanted hair around their ears. I leave most of it, though. It gives each of mine some personality.

Hi Chris! I've struggled with ears as well. I have one Sheltie with prick ears, one with really flopped ears, and one with perfectly tipped ears. My breeder finally taught me that the easiest way to keep them neat looking is to buy a pair of thinning shears and a fine tooth comb since your Sheltie is not likely to just let you snip away randomly! Comb a bit of the hair on the back of the ear up and then cut it with the thinning shears. This makes a nice, neat look that doesn't look like it's just been cut. It takes a while to get the job done but it's worth it. You can get great and reasonable scissors and supplies online from the dog sites.
 
I hear alot of people say they trim around the ears. Mine don't look particularly unruly, so I leave them natural. The only trimming I do is the feet.
 
I trim around Callie's ear because she had ear problems when I adopted her. I found that if I keep the hair trimmed that we have less problems and I can see her ears better too.
 
Treader's ears are prick too. Of course, he isn't pure Sheltie, but I just "sweep" the brush over the fur behind his ears and he rarely mats back there. The thing that works best with his ears is the greyhound comb. I misplaced the greyhound comb, so I just use a regular two-side people comb and it works just a good.
 
Thanks for all the great advice! It's not the mating, just making Layla tidier. I dropped my thinning shears, so they've been out of commission. Time to pony up for new ones :uhoh:

Hi All.
I wanted to let everyone know about this fantastic product that is easy to use called Vet Soultions, Cleansing Soultion.
I get it from my vet but I am sure it can be purchased from Foster and Smith too.
It has aloe and smells really good and all you do is squeese some into the inside of their ears and then get out of the way so they can shake out the excess.:eek2: I then have a towel handy and wipe dry the outside and the face area. It makes them more comfortable not being wet. However if your dog or cat is one to run and hide afterward let them, it will dry on it's own too.
Yes its for dogs, cats, puppies, and kittens.
Give it a try you will be pleased.
I use it on our dogs and our cat. :winkgrin:
 
I don't trim Treader's ear fringe because he's part Papillon. I just brush right behind his ears and around the and on the back of the ear.
