Ellie's two new bad behaviors

cookies in their crates- that's how I leave the house 
but mine have never really been heel nippers either. Cran once jumped up and grabbed my jeans from the front when he was a puppy.

Definately agree with needing a distraction as you leave the house. You should see Deska's tantrums if I leave and he isnt distracted. If I am in a hurry I just toss some kibble back into the room, otherwise he gets a kong, a chew or atbreakfast time they get a treasure hunt.
I know all about that teaching them something that turns into a bad habit. Oh so many things they have learnt because I laughed to start with because it was cute!
Definately turn of the back when she jumps up and walk away to avoid her circling (you may have to keep moving when you are holding something until she gets the idea). Alternatively when she tries it you could redirect her onto a squeaky toy, you could also try teaching her to sit whenever you have something in your hands seeing as she learnt to jump so readily. Definately stop all jumping first and then you can reintroduce the game, I love Ashley's idea of having a marker word for the game to let her know when its okay to jump.

what do you want Ellie to do instead of her biting your ankles? First box you have biting behavior, last box you have behavior you want to happen, what you have in the middle is your training, what are you doing now... train for what you want to happen... let's say teach her "go to your mat" command when you open the door... reward by tossing some treats there...
regarding jumping and taking stuff out of hands, play lots of " Its your choice" games... "you can offer a nice sit and be rewarded by playing with what I have in my hands when I put it down to the ground and say "get it!" or you can jump up and your toy gets placed on the shelf and no game happens"
If you have SG book "Ruff love", main line "positive is not permissive", I think it is very helpful to remember with willful and smart girls like Ellie.

I have so many different problems with Ellie, it's hard to keep them straight, lol!
Clarification: DH stays home on disability with vision loss, so he very rarely leaves the house. When he does leave, Ellie tries to stop him--grabbing pant legs, biting ankles, grabbing the back of shoes. She's always done that to him. We did get her to stop grabbing at DH for months and months, but now she is starting to do it to him again. Since I work full-time, she is used to me leaving, so until just lately, she has always calmly watched me leave from her position on the couch. Now she is starting to grab my ankles, pant legs, etc. So it's a new behavior with me. She also herds Richard but does not try to herd me. She is a puzzle.

I wish I could get into that brain of Ellie's and figure out why she so often does fine with training and then all of the sudden reverts back to old bad habits. We have to start from scratch so often!
We alos have another behavior issue. The groomer said that for the first time that when Ellie was in a crate and there was a dog on the grooming table, Ellie was growling and snapping at the dog who was totally ignoring Ellie. Ellie LOVES LOVES LOVES her groomer. Could she have been jealous??
When we were at the vets picking her up fro being groomed, a beautiful BC came in (soooooo gorgeous) and was wagging its tail at his owner, minding his own business about 18 feet from us, not looking at Ellie and Ellie went behind my legs and peeked around me and was growling. ????

I agree with this. After we adopted Pebbles, we used to put her in our room before leaving, and not let her roam the whole house, so we would give her a kong with a treat in it. Since then, our ritual has evolved, where I keep kongs in the freezer with a cookie in it, topped with peanut butter (the freezer makes a TINY bit more challenging to eat the cookie and peanut butter, and thus she is still busy with it while I am leaving). Now, Pebbles knows the drill so well, that in the morning we go for our walk, I come back take a shower and get ready, come downstairs, and as I am walking to the freezer, she is wagging her tail, and as soon as she sees the kong, she BOLTS upstairs into our room, and is waiting for her treat.
