I had to explain bully sticks to a customer today.....There were 3 customers lined up behind her at the time. I have to admit that I fumbled the answer...."Well, uuuhm, they part of a bull's anatomy that gets removed when they are gelded....you know, what I mean? Uuum, don't tell your husband.. Trust me though your dogs will love them" The woman looked at me blankly....."Well, its a bull's *****!" Eyes opened wide. No sale!

OK....got work on the sales technique apparently!

When they are castrated the part removed are called cow fries or rocky mountain oysters, or I am sure there are many other names

I knew that but I just couldn't think of another way to explain it tactfully. Sometimes I use "pizzle" and they get it. But I still get the blank looks alot!

Holee Rollers - Great for fetching, chewing and put a rawhide in the middle and a good activity toy for when you need an hour of silence/calm. I also have a friend who ran over theirs in the back yard with the lawn mower, and it just shot out without being tore up!

Kong - I use it similarly to the Holee Rollers but this is more a ball shape and size. Plus you can put goopy stuff in it like peanut butter etc. Sometimes freeze it too!

I also have this soft toy that you can put an empty water fall in so they still get to crunch it and make lots of noise but don't get the dangerous little pieces of plastic from.

Bully Sticks are awesome too, but with any rawhide/bone/whatever.. You need to watch them to make sure nothing is swallowed whole or too big of chunks at once..

I have a Holee Roller that Bacca used to love. I squeezed a jingly cat ball inside and he loved to shake it about. I like the rawhide idea --- I can see Indy going crazy trying to get at it! What kind of rawhide do you use....I'm assuming a stick ???? or the flat pieces???? We sell Sweet Potatoe "rawhide" that actually might be a healthier alternative.

Birch's top five chew items plus:

1. Bully sticks 6 in is good for him. last almost a week. Really like the braided ones for the big dogs as the last longer. Boredom buster.

2.Moo tubes(cow trachea) tough, rough ,makes him tired. Will last almost 2 weeks. With the older dogs I have noticed they do a great job of cleaning teeth, boredom buster of the pup

3. Cow's ears- less greasy and doesn't upset the stomach as much as pig's ears. last 2-3 days Boredom buster

4. moozles(merrick) Cow snout. WOW these are tough and take along time to finish he is still working on one he has had for 3 weeks. Boredom buster , have notice some teeth cleaning with the older dogs. They like Snoozles(pig snout) too but the moozles last longer.

5.himilayan dog chews-kinda pricey but last long time for the pup. Kinda gooy for the mane on the big dogs. Boredom buster

6. Kong-stuffed classic- he likes them but he loses interest quicker than with the others.

7. stuff toys- likes to chew on them favorites go dog toys dragons -super tough, no stuffing to remove, but will chew and gut any kind.

Diva here- Don't forgets the toilet paper stuff Birch, dats good too if no good treats or underwears are around.

Re: #7 - I've been looking at the Go Dog dragons....they sure are cute! It's on my list, along with the bully sticks.

Indy here....me LUVs toilet paper too! Mum don't put it on the roller-thing anymore cuz I likes it so much, but sometimes the humankid furgets and leaves it for me. I likes him!

Anybody ever try deer antlers? I hear its a hit or miss thing. Some dogs love 'em. Others just ignore them. I suspect the ones who don't like them might be getting ones that are too small so they don't really get a grip on them.

And what about Benko bones? They look yummy, but they are very messy.

I'm surprised at the feedback that a bully stick would last so long. I haven't tried them yet either, but assumed they would last about the same amount of time as a rawhide stick (not long)

All to say, that I'm going shopping at my store this week. I've been really good and not brought home anything but dog food so far.

But I keep looking at these wrought iron elevated dog dishes that look kind like this.....and really, really want them....

Believe me, I'm working on it! I've been told even to avoid selling the stuff to myself at cost because the sales tax police might frown upon it! Big sigh! I keep thinking about writing it off as theft, but I guess if they keep seeing my favourite brand of dog food disappearing off the shelf......big sigh!
