Face and herding... The beginnings

Face and I started with herding this year.
I don't know if the training here (in Western Europe) is similar to the kind of training in the US, so it would be interesting what you say.

Here we go:

Herding 2. time with sheep (1. time we just let her "look" and wanted to see if she's interested in sheep)

and then our 4. time with ducks

for me, ducks are more difficult (won't say, that with sheep it's easy...), but I'm trying to get better :biggrin2:

Thanks for sharing your videos--that was really neat to watch. Unfortunately there's no herding near me! But, I'd love to try it out.

thank you both! It's so great to see how satisfied she is, when she's working

That's fascinating. Face really seems to have a knack for it!

Yeah, it seems to be! Friends of mine with Border Collies and Working Kelpies said, that she's pretty talented and shows a lot of balance and has a good drive.

Now it's time for me, to learn how to handle my dog and the ducks/sheep. It's really not as easy as it looks like

My dad was a Shepherd, wayyyy back when... just after the war.
trust me I have been making a LOT of German Shepherd jokes over the years, lol
He has not passed that talent on to me, unfortunately...
I don't get how to do it, but I always LOVE to see dogs work!

I just love my great little working dog <3

today we had our first training with sheep after their "baby break". the last few weeks we just trained with ducks and it was much easier for me, because the ducks are a lot slower and I've got more time to think about, what I've got to do. Face has definitly more sheepsense than I

That was great! I love watching shelties in action. The more I watch herding, the more tempted I am to give it a shot. But it looks hard!

thank you both! it's just soooo much fun to watch this little dog at work. PASSION AND OBSESSION!

I wonder if anybody ever clicker trained a dog to herd sheep? :D

I don't think you can train with clicker like "tricks". a sheepdog needs a lot of sheepsense and things like that, to be able to manage different situation on its own. basic things cannot be trained, they are just part of the genes.

Yeah, obviously. Clicker training is not just for tricks, tho! It works also for shaping behaviours... But that makes sense, you gotta be a herding kind of dog, no doubt :)
That looks like SO MUCH FUN! For both of you!
