Faith had tick paralysis :-(

I don’t know if it was on this site, but years ago I heard of this happening!

The poor Sheltie owner was devastated as you were to find her dog paralyzed. Her vet could not diagnose what was causing it and suggested euthanasia. From what I can remember the dog was young!

I believe they were getting ready for the procedure when the vet tech came in with the medication and was loving holding the dogs head and ruff when she felt something in the dogs fur.
She immediately brought it to everyone’s attention and sure enough... it was a tick. Once removed the dog got better and regained mobility!

We love our Shelties for their beautiful lush coats. Yet, at times like this, it could have ended the dogs life!

I have to say Sharon, thank goodness you noticed that tick!!! I am so glad Faith is recovered!

Wow, what a fright! I thought I'd heard of every possible thing those nasty ticks can give but tick paralysis is a new one. So glad you figured it out! We treat the yard and the dogs for ticks with natural preventatives, but in the high tick months I also use Frontline, as much as I hate it. I am so glad to hear that Faith is OK!!!

I'm curious though...so you wouldn't treat this with doxycycline as you would Lyme or ehrlichiosis etc?

Wow! So scary. Glad you spotted that tick right away. And even happier that she’s already back to her normal self!

Ticks have been bad here this summer already. I’ve found at least 10 (only 1 attached and that was on Elise who I hadn’t treated yet st that time).

No, because what the tick injects is a neurotoxin, not a bacterium. Removal of the tick and treatment for any other ticks that might be attached but hidden by that lush Sheltie coat is all that is necessary, thank God. Yesterday we found a few dead ticks on Brooke, so at least that stuff we gave them works, and they had no reaction to the medication. I am ordering more and will treat all 3 dogs thru the summer.

Faith is a lucky girl to have you care for her. Ticks are so bad this year. Our vets offered a vaccination
for Lyme disease. My son's dog got the Lyme disease. His dog will be fine but never cured of this disease.
Regular checks and antibiotics. The bad part Lyme is worse on humans then it is for dogs. Glad you caught
the problem and all is well with Faith
Great job Sharon, Faith is doing well.

Yep, Faith was absolutely normal the next morning - fastest recovery I've ever seen. It sure was terrifying at the time, though.
