Feeding puppy

I feed 1/3c with fresh meat twice a day, at 5 months I usually cut out that lunch meal unless they are very thin, Six was one of those...he just started to level out at 3 years of age to where I cant feel his spine, he would burn off everything that he consumed.

I cant remember who posted about the bacon fat, but id cut that out ASAP!!! Shelties have issues with high fat diets that causes gallbladder issues that will kill them if not caught in time.

To tell if your puppy needs more of less food its really easy run your hand down their side if you can count every rib they are in perfect weight, if you cant find their ribs its time for a cut back! :wink2:

I measured Riley last week at 12 weeks and he was 10 inches. When he went to the vet a month ago he weight 5.7lbs. He will go again on Friday for his last set of puppy shots, so it will be interesting to see what his weight is.

Its hard to know when/how much start increasing his food. I guess that would probably be a good question for the vet.

He's a tiny guy. Similar weight and size to my girl at that age. I believe I also fed her 1/3 3x a day until she was around 6 months old. She did have some health issues as a puppy, so the vet wanted me to keep feeding her 3x a day. At 6 months, she was cut down to 1/3 2x a day and not long after that 1/4 cup 2x a day.

As far as increasing or decreasing food.... His weight and stools are probably your best indicators. If he is not overweight or underweight and is growing normally, then no need to mess with his food. If he starts to get chubby, cut back on treats and/or food. If he feels too thin, increase a little.

My dog gets soft stool when she is overfed, so that is another indicator for me to cut back a little.

My best advice is to discuss this with your vet. Good luck!
