Fence height?

Is a 4' high fence adequate for a sheltie? I'm concerned that they might be able to get their paws up over the edge and escape. Should I go 5' to be safe? Will most likely be a PVC privacy fence.

Hamish, Noah, and Emma were/are fine with 4'. Liam is my jumper and when he jumps at the fence, he is a good way up over the top of it. I would probably go to 5' just for safety.

Well, there is thinking of adequate height in terms of keeping your sheltie IN.
Most shelties won't attempt to jump a 4' fence (I have one that can and will though). I also have one that can go through a cat door without difficulty and I'm NOT talking about my itty-bitty Zoey here I'm speaking about chunky-butt Sasha! Zoey can go through a 4" x 4" hole no problem.

The other consideration is what might be on the OTHER side that you might want to keep OUT.

I agree with Janet about the holes. When I had the home inspection for Emma, the lady looked closely for little holes that the pups can get out. Liam would be able to wriggle through something fairly small as well as jumping the fence. Do we just love our Shelties?

inside my yard I have a 4' high fence seperating the yards. now around my perimeter I have a 6' stockaded fence. It works well since we have a fox/coyote problem around here..and the 4' inside fencing works great except for the winter when we have 3' of snow and Six decides he can just walk right over it:rolleyes2: but since your in FL im assuming or rather hoping snow wont be an issue for you!

A good discussion at the right time for me - I am trying to decide 4' or 5". Also, what material - wood or chain link- would you be using nsxrox?
