First AKC Trial Since Sept 2012

It's been 8 months since I've been able to enter an AKC trial. Usually I do one in February (but that was Daytona 500 weekend and I was out of town) and one earlier this month but had to drop out because my father-in-law came to visit. It's been a little frustrating because I'm trying finish my AX and AXJ titles before dropping to Preferred. (I only need 1 leg in each to finish them.)

We were able to enter 1 day at a local (like 10 min from my house local) AKC trial today.

Our standard run was beautiful. Nice speed, tight turns, great weaves... then the table happened. :( He bounced the table :gaah resulting in an NQ.

About one hour later we ran our JWW run. We finished in 1st place with a time of 37 seconds to earn our AXJ.

There's another trial in July I hope to enter Edan in, Standard only, to try and finish the AX

Unfortunately I don't have any video. There wasn't anyone with me who was able to film for me..

Well One out of 2 is not that Bad, Too bad about the table bounce but considering you haven't been at trail for a year and a half almost that not too bad, congrates on the AXJ

I haven't been at an AKC trial in 8 months but I have trialed - CPE and TDAA. The funny thing is, he doesn't bounce the smaller TDAA table which has a smaller table top.. (And I know just mentioning TDAA is going to cause this thread to become yet another 'let's bash on TDAA' fest for some.)

Congrats on your AXJ & 1st place! One for two after not showing in AKC for 8 months is great.

Good luck in July! Does Edan jump 16'' in AKC? If so, I can see why you want to drop him to preferred. I would've done the same if Bailey had to jump 16''. She's just a drop under 14'', so luckily she jumps 12''. Much easier on their joints in the long run.

Congrats on your new title.

I know how hard it is to come back after a lay off. Diva was out since Nov 2012 for puppies and I just got her back a month ago. Her first AKC trial we were terriblely off and didn't get 1 Q. We were finally starting to click this weekend though we still are a bit rusty and truthfully Diva is out of shape still.

Good luck in July. Are you going to enter him in MASters prefered Jumpers the same weekend? Ember has really taken to preferred even though she didn't have the height disadvantage Edan does (she is 13" running 12") the 8" height is easier on her repaired leg.

Congrats on the title. I wonder if it's that in tdaa there is less space between obstacles so less chance to build up speed to hit the table at. In akc, because the course has more space between obstacles, he is faster than in tdaa and he does it so infrequently that he is unprepared and slides off.

Honestly, no I don't think it's TDAA. Some of the facilities I run TDAA in have some pretty wide open flowy courses and we actually do get some decent speed going. I use a lot more distance work in TDAA so Edan can open up and run more. I've also pulled out our TDAA table just to practice in our building and ran him from one side of the room to another, no other obstacles in the way, and he's been able to stop.

He also stops on the full size tables, running full speed, in practice without fail which is what makes fixing this issue hard.

I think the issue comes from CPE actually. In CPE the table is only used to stop the clock in some of the games so you don't have to stop on it, just touch it. Normally we are running full throttle toward the table to get the best time possible resulting in him bouncing the table.

I don't think I can enter in July. I just looked at my calendar and that's the weekend of my spiritual group's retreat and I've already committed to attending that. The trial is a three day show so I'm going to look into what the Friday schedule looks like and see if I can do just Friday. (Not sure if I have another vacation day to take off from work.)

I didn't think I could mix my entries between Preferred an Regular; I thought it had to be all one class or the other. If I can mix them, then I'll definitely enter him in FAST and JWW Preferred and Regular Standard. I really want to finish his AX before moving him down since I only need one more leg.

Nope your good.:smile2: You just can't mix say regular Standard with prefered standard in the same weekend. From what I understand

Ch 8 sect 4:
Regular to Preferred is considered separately for Standard,
Jumpers, and FAST. This is a one-time crossover and the dog’s eligibility is determined as of the date that they receive
a qualifying score in the Preferred class (example: a dog with
an AX and an OAJ and no legs at a higher level in either class
may be entered in the Standard Preferred classes in Master
Standard Preferred, Excellent Standard Preferred, or Novice
Standard Preferred and in the Jumpers with Weaves Preferred
Classes in Excellent JWW Preferred, Open JWW Preferred, or
Novice JWW Preferred).
Once a qualifying score is earned, the dog is no longer
eligible to be entered in a different class level for future
entries in Preferred if they were entered using the one time
crossover.
There is no grandfathering of titles or points from the
Regular classes to the Preferred classes.

Sheri, congratulations! That's awesome.

Just another thought about the table (though your explanation of CPE certainly makes sense), could it be that he feels crowded because you usually let him find the obstacle on his own?

Anyways, bummer about the videos, but glad it was such a successful weekend. And hey on the plus side, now you have something to train ;)
