Flea and tick protection

The advantix is applied in two or 3 spots along the back - it is not possible for her to lick those areas. I do have a cat, and while they do play together - there is no mutual grooming going on - still for the first 24 hours after application I do keep a pretty good watch. It's a difficult decisions as the risk of Lyme disease is only about 10% in dogs even when bitten by an infected tick. Honestly if we lived in an area with fewer ticks I would just risk using a natural spray on repellent. Then there is the added cost I am spending about $300/year on these products - along with the prequisite annual heartworm testing.

My dogs lick the cats. My cats don't lick the dogs. When I used Advantix the cats actually would approach the sleeping dogs and lick them. It was like a magnet. The dogs can't lick the spots, but I don't think that is the link to mucocele. I think the link is through absorption for that in particular. Of course, the other concerns from licking are true too.

Spirit is on Interceptor for heartworm protection and Symparica (which is a new product) for fleas. So far she's doing great, with no side effects.

Advantage and Advantix both are showing a strong link to gallbladder disease as well... This is all enough to keep me away from those three. I am switching to the Seresto collar instead. I have been hearing a lot of good things about it and it seems much safer for Cleo in the long run.

Actually Seresto collar is basically slow release Advantage. The active ingredient is Imidacloprid which is the problem ingredient. Sorry - just when you thought you had the conundrum solved. I'm still hunting out treatments too. Tried Revolution on Deska and Frontline with Tully this month. It's a nuisance because the worming tablets also have heartworm in them and I don't want to double up.

Yeah I figured that out. I may be looking at bravecto and interceptor or some natural alternative. There is just so much out there that give warnings for herding dogs specifically it is just scary.

I was using Nexgard without any problems - until Tully decided she didn't like the chewable thing in her bowl.

Been seeing lots of commercials for Bravecto recently- wondering if anyone has used it and how it works.......?????

I've had excellent results with Advantage Multi. It's topical, not ingested, and the dose is very small, with two proven ingredients for fleas, heartworms and a number of other parasites. I apply it every six weeks from May through October for heartworms. I haven't ever seen a flea or a sign of one on Dickens, so I'm assuming that regimen is adequate for flea protection as well.

I did use this and have not had any problems, however I just don't like what this article says about it in the long run.
