flu vaccine?

Zak starts his classes next week and my vet suggested that he get a flu vaccination before starting. I just wanted to get other opions on this subject. She teaches agility at the place we are taking Zak and I have been there before with Maggie and Katie.
 
if the canine flu is a big problem in your area then I would consider it.

There haven't been many outbreaks in my area...that I know of, so I didn't get it for Bailey.
 
I got the Kennel Cough and K9 Flu vaccines for Edan because of the training and trials we go to. Sure, I'm around people who are taking the time to train their animals and have a better chance of them being vaccinated than at the local park but better safe than sorry.

However, if your Vet says its not necessary for your area, I wouldn't get the vaccination. (My vet specifically recommended it for me because what we do, as mentioned above.)
 
tell your vet everything you plan on doing in the next 6 months. And I personally recommend it over anything any vet says if they are around dogs frequently. My vet suggest I don't give the bordatella vaccine every 6 months but I get it anyway, and its a damn good thing I do because there was an outbreak at Nickles Doggy daycare a month ago. Remember the vet may have a good general idea whats best for MOST dogs in the area, but only you know whats best for YOUR dog.
 
I look at vaccines this way. What is the risk of the vaccine vs the serverity of the disease it causes? If the disease can easily be treated or resolved on its own don't vaccinate. If the disease causes severe disease and can cause death then vaccinate. :smile2:

I don't vaccine for flu. I don't know enough about the vaccine to risk it. It is too new.

Amen! No flu shots here either (doggie or human). I don't give bordatella either. I found out the hard way how useless that one is. One of my dogs has had kennel cough, and I think she is stronger for having had it and gotten over it.

Excellent advice as always Dr. Shelli :yes:. I remember when the Chicken Pox vaccination first came out over 15 years ago, but our Pediatrician didn't know much about it either at that time, so we didn't get those shots for the kids. A month later, my kids both got the virus..
 
Thanks all for your reply's and thanks to our resident vet. I have read up some on this virus and I am on the fence about it, I can understand her wanting to give it to him but Zak is just 22 weeks old and I hate putting more chemicals in him. I did read where it just lesson's the effects if they get the flu. I don't get the flu shot for me. For the most part it makes me nevous to do it.
S0 I will just go get the papers I need and keep my fingers crossed.
 
I don't give Lepto, Bordatella, or flu shots to my dogs. My vet has also been doing titers on Indy and Emma instead of shots on schedule.

I didn't get either of the flu shots this year, but I might have if they had been more readily available in my area; since I'm doing some home health work now. My company gave me a voucher for the shot...just no shots available where the voucher was good! Oh well.
 
I do not support flu shots for humans or animals, unless person or animal has problems with immune system or chronically ill...
